Just returned from a cheeky few days Fly Fishing and it was simply sublime . Thanks to Nigel the owner and his staff for making it so memorable. Fabulous laid back atmosphere throughout our stay and for Nigel’s patience when teaching us the art of Fly Fishing . Food , in particular the brekkie was excellent . Thanks again for making it such a great trip Peter , Chris & Michael

A little gem of a hotel, prime situation in Appleby, extremely friendly staff, excellent food and a lovely comfortable bed. We stayed for a long weekend intending to partake in the fly fishing tuition that the hotel offers but unfortunately the weather had other ideas. Stayed in a lovely large suite and yes some may say it’s a bit rough round the edges but for us that was part of the charm. Will definitely be back.

Stayed 1night was made very welcome lovely location in market square
Food really nice and restaurant food fantastic good selection of wines
Shop in hotel amazing
Room clean and spacious tea / coffee available
Only negative 2 toilet brushes in toilet but both broken however I forgot to mention on leaving but bed so comfy feather pillows and Milton brown toiletries a bonus

Generally very good. Welcoming staff, particularly nice bar and bar food, good breakfast. Room 5 a little tired, especially carpet, carpet seams and wonky floor under. Appleby lovely.

This is the second time we have stayed here and both times have been a very enjoyable experience. The first time we were upgraded to a suite, and this was luxurious, a very spacious sitting area with comfortable settees and overlooking the market square through elegant bow windows. The next time we were also upgraded to another spacious and elegant room. The breakfasts were cooked to order and had an extensive menu. The dinners were again freshly cooked with local produce and a ver good choice of starters, mains and deserts. Thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable retreat.

We visited the on-site cafe which we were disappointed with. Even though the menu is limited they had run out of several items. The corridor to the toilets were covered in cobwebs and the building itself needs a major refurbishment

This is an 'old school' hotel. It is not a concrete block, it has character and charm that is often lost in today's vacations. I attended an event in the area and stayed with Nigel and the team. I could not have been more looked after. The food was fantastic, the staff was so helpful, Lynne on reception and the other staff, could not have been more accommodating. The breakfast was huge and kept me going all day. I found it peaceful and restful, it's history is clearly evident. I have made an honest evaluation of a character and historical hotel. Situated in the heart of Appleby and is ideal for a vacation. Thank you so much for looking after me. I will definitely be returning.

Property needs investment badly to refresh a somewhat tired establishment. Rooms were ridiculously hot with the weather and no air con. Windows either didn’t open at all, or sashes wouldn’t stay open. Beds were soggy and towels were see-through. In fairness, the bathroom (apart from the translucent towels) was decent and the breakfast, breakfast area and breakfast staff were all great. It’s in a perfect location. It wasn’t expensive, and it was fine for one night. so I guess you get what you pay for.
