I booked this Qiuguo hotel after very good stays and experiences at 2 other Qiuguo hotels in Beijing and Shanghai. I booked for a Friday and Saturday night, as I wanted to spend 2 days exploring the Dongcheng district of Beijing close by.
Problems began trying to find the hotel on the Friday evening, as it is down an alley with no lit signage to direct you to the hotel, so I spent 30 minutes trying to find it before phoning them and even though they staff do not speak English, they realised the problem, and a male member of staff came out to find me - This was the high point of my stay at this hotel.
The check-in was very tricky and slow due to the language problems and despite my using a translator app. I was allocated room 8203 - A Superior Queen Room.
The room was smaller than the 2 previous Qiuguo hotels I stayed at, and although the same decor and design, this room was older and quite worn. Even though I had selected a non-smoking room, the room also smelt of smoke.
I noticed at the top of the stairwell outside my room was being used to store the bags of clean bedlinen, but I thought nothing more of it. I headed straight out to eat.
When I returned later that evening to sleep, it was then that I realised the very bad smell in the room, which was explained when I looked out of the window as the local street cleaning \ waste disposal depot is right behind the hotel!
Next morning when showering, I noticed a leak from the shower into the toilet floor, which I subsequently slipped on when using the toilet. The television in the room although working, did not have any working channels available.
Breakfast next morning was ok - Many Chinese options but no fruit juices or cold milk for the cereals, so I had coffee and toast.
I returned to the hotel later and tried conversing with the staff about my concerns, but I gave up as they could not understand me, even when again using the translator app.
That night I went the local Ghost Street to explore and have dinner, and again when returning to the hotel @ 11:00 pm the smell in my room from outside was very bad I decided to sleep, but this was not possible, as very soon there was a delivery of clean bed linen, and the staff were outside my room for 1 hour talking loudly and banging trolleys about.
Next morning, I was woken again just before 7:00 am by the talking, banging and general noise outside my room again when the staff came to collect the clean bed linens.
As I was awake, I got up and went for breakfast but every seat was taken by departing guests who were not eating, but were waiting for their group transport to arrive - No member of the hotel staff asked these people move for those wanting to eat so I ended up going outside to a Starbucks.
My time and experiences at this hotel were extremely poor - The hotel location is ok for access to the Lama Temple metro station which is a 10-minute walk away, but the alley the hotel is dirty with dumped cars, lots of rubbish, as is much of the surrounding area, which is not the same as I have found in the other locations I have visited in China.
As I had communication problems with the hotel staff, I raised all my concerns via Trip.com who tried to resolve them with the hotel, but the manager Mr Bi declined any compensation because I did not raise the concerns whilst I was at the hotel.
Beware if choosing to stay at this hotel, as although the pictures look very nice, the pictures must be quite old, as the hotel is very worn. The location is ok, but the surrounding area is poor, and the smell in the room at the hotel was bad.
Quiguo hotels, if you would like to contact me to discuss the above, then please contact Trip.com and request my contact details.
