Genius Loci Country Inn

This was our first visit to Genius Loci Country Inn, and we would return in a heartbeat. We were thrilled with the inn itself, a converted farmhouse, and the amazing beauty of the setting. Our room, comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated, had a panoramic view of the wine fields immediately below and the nearby towns further in the distance. Hosts Mary and Michele were unfailingly attentive and gracious, giving us special insights into the area and ideas about places to visit, from the Basilica S. Francesco in Assisi with its Giotto frescoes to a medieval paper-making workshop in nearby Bevagna. We couldn't have asked for a more rewarding stay!

We have stayed at this property several times and consider it our “home away from home “ in Italy. The hosts, the Taconi family, couldn’t be more attentive, gracious and welcoming. Mary Taconi has the most wonderful recommendations for not only restaurants, but lovely little towns to explore. Most of the rooms have gorgeous views and are beautifully appointed. Sitting on the outside patio for breakfast or an afternoon glass of wine affords guests the splendor of looking across vineyards to amazing panoramas. The location of the Inn is wonderful for visiting Umbria and Tuscany. We have travelled to the north (Lake Garda) and to the south (Puglia region) from there, and it’s always a beautiful ride.

We visited Genius Loci this past September (a bit late on this review) and had a wonderful experience and stay! Mary and Michael made us feel like we were in our own home. They were so welcoming and personable. Mary and Michael would meet us every morning over a yummy breakfast and share their breath of knowledge about the local area regarding museums, medieval towns and restaurants. Michael was often around during the day or available via WhatsApp to answer your questions, make dinner recommendations and reservations and was so much fun to just hang out with and talk about the Umbrian regIon. Their country farmhouse and the accommodations were beautifully restored and had stunning views of their vineyards, farm fields, the valley and the mountains in the distance. Additionally, their country inn is centrally located between all of the major sites and towns that most people like to visit, which is one of the biggest reasons we selected it. We would highly recommend Genius Loci Country Inn to everyone!!

A unique place where you can stay and relaxed, enjoy a perfect and delicious breakfast, with a wonderful view. All the adjectives are not excesives for Genius Loci. From here you can visit the beautiful cities from Bevagna and come back to have the best rest. Hope to come back soon.

It was a wonderful time of year to explore Umbria and particularly the lovely town of Bevagna. Genius Loci enjoys a prime location offering stunning views of the countryside. Mary and Michael are excellent hosts and we were as comfortable there as we are in our own home. We look forward to future stays in their lovely place.

the whole "ensemble" is simply breathtaking. not only the views, but as well the restored old farmhouse has been rebuilt perfectly, not taking into account the costs. this is something you feel with every step. perfectly charming hosts, perfect breakfast with umbria at your feet, perfect to enjoy a drink on the terrace or close to the fireplace. and the quietness is unbeatable!

Genius Loci is set in an idyllic position over looking the valley and onto the mountains. The valley is carpeted with verdant vines olives trees and sunflowers in spring and summer and in autumn the green gives way to a carpet of red, bronze, orange and golds as the vines ready for winter. Genius Loci is a haven and is ready to welcome all travellers into the family and friends of Genius Loci. Mary, Maurzio and Michael are generous and warm hosts with many years of knowledge of the area. They offer suggestions and will arrange tours of vineyards and book a table at restaurants. The rooms are a delight offering fabulous views and comfort. Breakfast is plentiful with a wide range of food and if Mary and Michael are aware they will cater for dietary requirements such as gluten free. The pool is a place of quiet reflection and overlooks the vines and valley. I would highly recommend Genius Loci to anyone wanting a break from the toils of modern life or for people wanting a more energetic break as there are fabulous walks, opportunities for cycling and even water sports in the surrounding areas.

We have just returned home from a 5-day visit to Genius Loci. I must say that the choice of the accommodation was the perfect one as the experience at this beautiful Country Inn was the highlight of our trip. One cannot ask for a better location, as it is right in the middle of everything that there is to see in Umbria! And for those who are into wine, it is surrounded by the famous Montefalco Sagrantino vineyards. And for the foodies, the restaurants within a 10-kilometre radius, especially those in Montefalco and Bevagna, are of the highest standards. Michael, the host, went out of his way to make us feel as comfortable as possible, and was always available with recommendations and information about every question that we asked. The parking lot on sight was a bonus, as we were always guaranteed a parking place just outside of our room. The breakfast was superb, it included a vast variety of fresh local products from fruits to cheeses and salumis, omelettes, cereals, yogurts, fruit juices, cakes, teas and coffees, etc etc. I must also mention the service during breakfast, which was always served with a smile. Our room was very spacious, clean and the ensuite included a bath tub, which has become a rarity nowadays! The property also has a self-serving Bar, which was very convenient for a drink after returning back from a dinner or when hanging out by the pool. The pool area was perfect for a swim in the hot hours of the afternoon. The views from our suite, the breakfast area and the pool were breathtaking! We used to spend hours, from early morning until we finished breakfast just looking at the scenery and trying to absorb as much beauty as we can! If anyone is planning to visit Umbria, look no further, Genius Loci is your place, I can guarantee this through our amazing experience at this place. If we plan any other trips in the area we will be returning back again and again!

My husband and I have traveled in many countries and, most frequently, in Italy - from Rome to Varenna on Lake Como. During a stay in Todi, we discovered Bevagna. Wanting to revisit Bevagna and to further explore Umbria, our research revealed the Genius Loci Country Inn. Our initial stay at Genius Loci resulted in, to-date, six additional visits, plus treasured life-long friends in the Tacconi’s, as well as buddies that we met on the Genius Loci veranda. Re-reading other reviews of Genius Loci, the care that reviewers have taken to share their Genius Loci affection and experiences in Umbria is so apparent. To all travelers who wish to visit Umbria or are just passing through on their exploration of Italy, my best suggestion in my review is to take many moments to read the reviews already offered to assist future visitors in their evaluation of a stay. The reviews are so encompassing of Genius Loci’s offerings and the Umbrian experience, that I find it difficult to add to them. There may be a gap in reviews due to Covid lockdown and reduced tourism, but I can assure you, having just enjoyed over two weeks at the Inn, that the only changes are subtle additions to the delightful Genius Loci experience. You will love the Inn, Umbria, the Tacconi’s, and your vacation. Other than offering strong encouragement to add Genius Loci to your Italian bucket list, I can only add that we’re already thinking about when to schedule our next visit.
