A diamond in the rough. I love a non chain where the owners show up to meet you and let you know the lay of the land. Clean updated rooms, great location, close to the the beach, fast wifi and great coffee.

The bungalows are a hidden gem- newly restored and beautifully appointed, spacious for 2 people, away from the overcrowded tourist places, yet basically at the beach (short jungle walk away). Tyler, our host, was always there, super nice and super helpful. You need to have a 4WD to get there (steep driveway, about 2 miles from Santa Teresa downtown, rough roads). Its 5 min drive to the supermarket, 5 minute drive in the other direction to the Hermosa Beach (probably the best spot for surfing classes). Two nearby restaurants were closed (rain season), but its super close to multiple other food options (restaurant at the banana beach was probably our favorite). Highly recommended!

Simple accommodations north of busy Santa Teresa. Clean comfortable. Daily breakfast, parking, AC. Reasonable price between $30 hostel and $600-$800 hotels. No ocean view; Short path to beach, past a few other homes. Can also walk to Rocomar beach restaurant but otherwise you would want a car to see more. Numerous nearby beaches offer surfing at all levels. We worked with Mario at Nalu surf shop and were happy. Tyler was helpful and made several spot-on local recommendations. Santa Teresa is eclectic beach community where you will share the road with bikes, motorcycles, ATVs, delivery, trucks, dust, pedestrians, dogs and vehicles of all kind. It’s part of the experience Pura Vida.

This was a quaint bungalow in the jungle and steps to the beach. The grounds were beautiful, the breakfast was great, the owner very accomodating, rooms were very clean, enjoyed our stay here being so close to the beach.

The bungalow was super comfortable, clean and had a very comfortable king sized bed. The location is great because you are just far enough North of the busy center of town so that the forest and amazing beach are very quiet, but close enough to enjoy the restaurants and action if you want to. Owners Mary and Tyler are friendly and courteous, and went out of there way to help us out and make sure we had a good trip.

Makanas is an amazing place to stay in Santa Teresa! Tyler has done a wonderful job with the property and is very helpful with locals tips and recommendations. We got an ATV rental in town for the five days we were here and it was awesome. The perfect (and very fun) way to get around and explore. The breakfast was included at Makanas and was a delicious and simple Costa Rican plate. The rooms were up to date, cute, clean, and air conditioned. The beach was beautiful and 30 seconds from the front door. I’d highly recommend staying here as a home base for exploring Santa Teresa!

The bungalows are very peaceful, clean and cozy and the location was absolutely perfect! We loved every minute of our stay there and have already recommended Makanas to our friends and family.
Tyler was an excellent host and provided us with great recommendations about what to do in town: where to go, what to see, what to eat and how to get around and make the best of our trip. He was incredibly hospitable, attentive to us and made our stay wonderful.
Lacie makes a great breakfast, as well! Highly recommended.
