Coober Pedy is famous for its underground homes, so I couldn't resist the opportunity to stay in an underground hostel carved into the sandstone using the same tunnelling tools the miners use in their workings. I had booked a 2 bed dorm but was put in a 4 bed dorm by myself. The dorm is basically a cavern bored into the rock off a main corridor, with 2 sets of bunks and a curtain for privacy. No other furniture at all. There is nowhere to store your valuables or luggage. On the second night, some weird guy was walking the corridor all night and peering in through the curtain. Linen is provided, but is mismatched and a little worn, very much like the utensils in the kitchen. Most of the frypans had long ago lost their nonstick coating. Not the owner's fault, but these things don't last forever. It was an interesting experience and I would recommend it for the price, being much cheaper than motels in the area and for the novelty of experiencing living underground.
