Manor House Backpackers

Great cozy little place in Dunedin. Clean and well taken cared of. Pro : Big kitchen, free breakfast , towels in the bathroom Con : no locks or key for the door so no safety for your things just be aware:)

Terrible customer service!!!! Stayed at Manor House Backpackers on 16-18 November. Upon check in staff made a mistake and I was doubled charged for my stay. I got in touch with the staff multiple times over the last month and I was promised that I will get a refund and a screenshot with the confirmation of payment as soon as possible. I still have not received either a refund or a confirmation.

Walked in. People drinking outside playing music. Smelt like pot. Waited 10 minutes to check in. Some absolute characters walking around. Room was terrible, smelt horrible. Only a bottom sheet and a duvet that I doubt was washed. No key to the room. I’d best describe as a homeless shelter. We left straight away and booked somewhere else.

Met with friends who were staying there. The place does not appear clean and some of the permanent residents are off putting. There is a smell when you arrive in the front foyer. The building is dated and dark.

I relocated to Dunedin with my two children. At first Tina Meihana (the owner) seemed lovely and very accommodating but the longer you stay the quicker you realize it's all a front. Regular drinking, pot smoking and violence occurs here and the majority of it is the owners and staff. I was kicked out with my children late at night for simply calling the police out of fear for our safety when one resident assaulted another. While the police were there, Tina ran upstairs and assaulted me in the bedroom, she had already tried breaking down the toilet door to get to me and my injured friend and her ex-Partner (Mason) who is one of the managers, tried grabbing my phone from my hand while I was on a call to the police. The only one who seemed to be reasonable was Tina's partner Maui but unfortunately Tina and Mason were often too drunk to see any sense or acted like it was a high school playground and wouldn't listen to reason. This place is not run like a business at all! On a daily basis they are drinking, smoking pot and getting into verbal and physical arguments with each other as well as the residents (despite Tina being pregnant and having her own young children there she seemed to be the ring leader of the majority of the problems and didn't think twice about assaulting others, male or female). They have not cleaned at all during the level 4 lockdown which means that place could be crawling with all sorts of lethal bacteria. They allow men to walk around exposing themselves in front other residents and children. I am glad to have my children out of that environment, it's not safe for children and I heavily believe Tina shouldn't be a mother if she is to continue carrying on behaving like that! Absolutely appalled!! Surveillance footage has been handed to the police!

Clean linen, comfy mattress, and a kitchen with all the amenities and breakfast provided. Localy owned and operated it was nice to enjoy a stay with kiwi hospitality. I had a few hiccups - a rare error in booking my shuttle left me killing a couple of hours at the airport and my booking of a 4 bed dorm turned into a stay in a 6 bed... ... but on the upside it was a great locale, clean linen and comfy matresses, breakfast provisions were handy; spices and tea/coffee were available, and the staff were firendly and eager to help. Solid 4/5 from me. Was happy overall and I'm sure the few hiccups I encountered were rare and circumstantial.
