Averon Guest House

My wife (Kathleen League) and our friend (Jiang Congyang) had the privilege of spending a week at the Averon Guest House in mid-September 2023. We had a wonderful time, in every way. The room was plenty large for us, and both the best were very comfortable. I had a nice table and chair where I could work, and the bathroom was fine also. I would say the shower was a little small for me, but the fact is that I was too big for it. Water pressure and heat was excellent. Breakfast was basic but fine for all of us. And coffee/tea service in the room worked very well. The proprietor/owner, Alan Cran. and his staff were personable and attentive. The building itself is both classic (it is 260-years old) and very well-maintained, with lovely gardens out front. The neighborhood around the Averon is charming and has many good restaurants, cafes, and pubs, and a nice grocery store as well. One of the most enjoyable parts of our stay, and of the trip altogether was Alan's performance every night at 9:30 of traditional Scottish songs. Alan's voice is lovely and perfect for these songs, which he has been singing for a long time, and his classical guitar technique is very good as well. Each night he also would play one song on the Bodhran, which is an Irish frame drum, and Kathleen and I found that especially impressive, as the rhythms are complex, and to sing at the same time was brilliant. This takes place in the very pleasant front room, with a fireplace (that has always been there), and Alan presents the songs with stories and a video presentation of scenes from around Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland. It's about as nice a half-hour as one could hope for, and the songs are different every night, but concluding with Auld Lang Syne. Really a great treat. We recommend the Averon Guest House fully, and we look forward to getting back there in the not-distant future. We really enjoyed our stay at the traditional and very authentically Scottish Averon Guest House. It is located in the city centre, in a quiet street near the Union Canal, so we could reach most attractions by foot. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast ist fine - not too fancy, but we liked the fresh fruit, muesli and the unlimited tea and toast trays. :) The live music that is on every evening exceeded our expectations - Dave, the host, told us interesting facts and stories about different parts of Edinburgh and Scotland every evening, he showed us videos of attractions, traditions and wildlife and sang and played fetching Scottish folk songs. That was really enlightening and entertaining, and we were always looking forward to these evenings near the fireplace. The room was clean and comfy, not too large, but we felt at home and had everything we needed, including our own toilet and shower, tea set and a fancy chandelier. I can really recommend this accomodation and would book it again anytime.

My partner and I stayed at this guest house for 6 days. While there were several disappointing aspects, there were also positive experiences: Positives: Atmosphere: The ambiance of Scottish music played throughout the guest house added a charming touch to the environment. Hospitality: The hosts were genuinely kind and welcoming, which made our stay more pleasant. Negative: Breakfast: Unfortunately, this was one of the worst breakfasts I've experienced at a guest house. The offerings were very limited, with nothing hot except for tea and coffee. We only had six slices of square bread, a few slices of cheese, industrial jam, cold cereal, and milk, with the pastries being mediocre at best. Room Cleaning: The cleanliness of the room was also unsatisfactory. Housekeeping was minimal or not done at all. We ran out of toilet paper, the floor was very dirty, and the bed was poorly made, with only the top cover hastily rearranged.

Beautiful People. Homey place We are grateful to spent our days in such a peaceful safe place while enjoying other parts of Scotland . I can sense that Scottish people are warm and cheerful. A must stay at Averon. Experience the Scottish Music

I was impressed by the warm&traditional house and location. It was a great time for me to sit around and listen to Scottish music every night from Mr. Alan Cran at the Averon House. very nice! and with the option of enjoying Scottish music live! we enjoyed our stay true that maybe it would be nice to have some healthier options for breakfast but we loved it anyway! we would repeat again because its a really nice place to stay!

I had a fantastic stay at the Averon Guest House with my Mum, Uncle and Grandma. Our room was spacious and the guest house is in an excellent location. We all especially loved the Scottish music by the fireplace every evening! The hosts were also very helpful in guiding us to book a brilliant tour of Loch Ness.

Lovely time in this guest house, especially during the 9.30pm Scottish music concert by the owner. It’s so nice to perpetuate the tradition, bravo !

The rooms are small and cramped and could hear everyone walking around creeky floor boards but you have a tea, kettle and coffee supplies, the breakfast was disappointing only toast, cheese, fruit and cereal NO cooked breakfast we ended up finding somewhere else to eat because we was still hungry the shower was low pressure the owner was pulling faces at us all time we was there which was rude Not staying here again only good part was beds was comfy and it was close to the town centre
