Sallatunturin Tuvat

I visited Salla with my husband and children (aged 8 and 5) in February half term with Crystal Ski. We had the most amazing stay in the middle of nowhere. The snow was amazing and unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before (in the alps). The main purpose of our holiday was to introduce our children to skiing and Salla was the perfect place to do this with quiet ski runs, on some days we felt like we had the ski runs to ourselves. We loved the keep warm huts that were dotted around either by the ski area or at the lakes when hunting for the Northern Lights. We would highly recommend packing sausages and marshmallows to enjoy whilst you warm up. Our accommodation was basic but very clean and had a sauna and fire place which was lovely to warm up at the end of a really cold day. The kitchen was well equipped, it only had a microwave and 2 ring hob but that was adequate for us. The chalet was well located and only a 5-10 minute walk to the slopes and there is a lake 5 minutes over the road where we went to try and spot the Northern Lights. We rented a ski locker at the slopes to save us carrying our skis and poles especially as the children got tired after a days skiing, so I would recommend this if you are travelling with small people. I think it cost around 25 euros for the week. The ski rental shop were really efficient and helpful and some of the equipment we rented was brand new. If you are travelling with Crystal Ski the coach stops at a supermarket in Kuusamo, we got given about 45 minutes to get all the shopping we would need for a week. The rep called it ‘Supermarket Sweep’ and it did feel a little hurried but manageable , just make sure you have made a comprehensive list in advance. There is a very small shop in the hotel in resort with things like milk, bread, basic toiletries, sweets, some drinks and cupboard items but it would be best to get everything you need at the supermarket. There are a few restaurants in resort but the only one we used was the Keloravintola at the bottom of the slope- the food was delicious (especially the doughnuts), we found the prices ok and similar to UK prices. The restaurant was clean, the staff were friendly and it overlooked the nursery slope which would be handy if you fancied warming up with a hot drink if other members of your party are having skiing lessons. On the other side of the hill at the bottom of the blue runs there is a small bar/hut where you can get drinks and doughnuts, and warm up by the fire, we used this a few times and it was also lovely! One of the days we went to Salla Wilderness Park to do a Reindeer Safari. Our excursion lasted around 3 hours and this included learning to drive a reindeer sleigh, feeding the reindeer and a sausage, bun and hot drink in a fire hut. The men who ran our trip were very friendly and gave us lots of information about the reindeer and encouraged everyone to ask lots of questions. It was a really unforgettable experience. Fantastisch verblijf, geweldig restaurant, top ontbijt en diner. Zeer vriendelijk personeel. Hondensafari was het ultieme van de reis. Snowscooter vonden wij gevaarlijk dat kun je niet zomaar doen, beter is eerst met de mensen een proefritje maken om te voelen hoe dit moet. Kleinschalig met een heerlijk warme blokhut. Prachtige omgeving, zeker een aanraden in de middle of nowhere!

Wir hatten eine „Doppelhüttenhälfte“ als Unterkunft für eine Woche, etwas oberhalb des Hotels mit seiner Rezeption und dem Parkplatz. Die Hütte war sehr sauber und großzügig gestaltet. Das Bad beinhaltete auch eine Sauna. Der Wohnbereich war neben der obligatorischen Fußbodenheizung auch mit einem offenen Kamin ausgestattet. Brennholz war ausreichend verfügbar und konnte jederzeit geordert werden. Die Betten waren gut, wenngleich die Matratzen etwas fest waren. Unser Reisepaket beinhaltete Halbpension. Das Frühstück und Abendessen wurde im Kiela Restaurant serviert. Die Entfernung von unserer Hütte zum Restaurant betrug ca. 15 Minuten zu Fuß. Das Essen war ausgezeichnet, vielfältig und abwechslungsreich und wurde jeweils als Büffet angeboten. Die Umgebung konnte mit Alpinski, Langlaufski oder zu Fuß intensiv erkundet werden. Letzteres haben wir gemacht. Das Skigebiet war erstaunlich groß und hatte etliche Abfahrten zu bieten. Die Langlaufloipen und Wanderwege waren gut gepflegt und verliefen sehr abwechslungsreich durch die Natur.

Cottage in mezzo al bosco con camino e sauna...un sogno. La pulizia del cottage è fantastica, la reception e il ristorante si trovano a due passi dalla zona dove ci sono i cottage, il cibo è tipico finlandese (molto speziato) ed è buono. Il personale disponibile e molto gentile. Ottima sistemazione.

Salla en omgeving is helemaal gericht op de winter en dus in de zomer veel rustiger. De bungalows van SallatunturinTuvat zien er wat gedateerd uit maar de inrichting mankeert niets aan. Echter, met 30 graden is het geen doen zonder airco. Wel prima wifi. Je kunt goed eten in het restaurant en dat geldt zowel voor het diner als het ontbijt. Maar een groot nadeel van Finland in de zomer is de enorme hoeveelheid muggen en ander steektuig. Buiten eten/zitten is er dus niet bij.

We hebben een week verbleven in een vierpersoonshuisje. Het park is ruim opgezet en erg rustig en er zijn diverse dingen te doen zoals skiën, langlaufen, fatbiken, wandelen en sneeuwscootertochten. Het restaurant heeft een geweldig uitgebreid ontbijt, het dinerbuffet is een stuk beperkter. In restaurant Kiela kan je geweldig à la carte eten. Het personeel is verder ontzettend aardig, ze zijn behulpzaam, spreken goed Engels (en een beetje Nederlands) en niets is hen te veel en je kan ook nog met ze lachen. De huisjes zijn op zich prima, er zijn genoeg faciliteiten voorhanden. Wel zijn de huisjes gedateerd en de bedden zijn ronduit slecht. Letterlijk een houten plank met een foam ‘matras’ en een super dunne topper. 1 kamer had twee normale bedden (die wel helemaal doorlagen), de andere kamer had een bedbank (van ongeveer 175 cm) en daaronder een lade waar ook nog in kon slapen (van ongeveer 165 cm). Ik heb hier een hele fijne vakantie gehad in een rustige omgeving met geweldig personeel dat de vakantie helemaal top maakt!

Abbiamo alloggiato 2 notti, molto bello, un vero e proprio appartamento compreso di sauna, angolo cottura, asciugatrice in bagno, angolo con camino, il tutto immerso nel bosco innevato. Unica nota negativa le coperte del letto erano sporche, peccato. Abbiamo usufruito del servizio colazione e cena al ristorante convenzionato e pietanze ottime, tutto self service.

Abbiamo soggiornato tre notti in questa struttura. Cottage caldi, puliti, grandi, dotati di diversi comfort. Addirittura la sauna in camera. Nelle estreme vicinanze partono i safari tipici (moto slitta, husky, renne). Ristorante a buffet o alla carta di buon livello. Colazione con scelta dolce/salati. Guardate il cielo di notte, l aurora appare!!
