We stopped for lunch and were pleased to find a good selection of gluten free options rather than the usual two or three in most pubs (if that). We waited a while but realised why when the food came out as it was clearly all home cooked. The toilets were spotlessly clean with good quality soap and dryers. The waitress who served us was particularly pleasant and helpful.

Lovely food and not overly expensive, only let down was the service, lots of young staff serving, who were very pleasant but clearly out of their depth at times.Long wait for food and when we asked for another drink it was served by a young boy who clearly wasn’t 18 , is this legal?

WEVE JUST RETURNED FROM A 100 MILE ROUND TRIP TO SAMPLE THE CARVERY NOW BEING SERVED IN THE BLACK BULL AND WE WERE NOT DISSAPOINTED THE CHEF WAS GENEROUS WITH THE PORTIONS AND THE REST OF MY PLATE WAS OVERFLOWING!! HE WAS WELCOMING AND THE REST OF THE STAFF WERE BUSY! NEVER SPOKE TO THE BOSS AS SHE WAS BUSY PULLING PINTS ETC! IM GLAD SHE HAS TURNRD THE PLACE ROUND AND WISH HER AND HER TEAM EVERY SUCCES!

Just popped in for the Sunday carvery on way to view caravan the quality of the food is excellent,very large portion and very tasty ,staff very friendly beautiful old inn.i will defo book a room just to come back to saviour the food and the vast selection of drinks

Room was immaculate, bed very comfy. Plenty room, everything clean and well serviced. Was a warm weekend, air con fan was great, room was perfect. Plenty towels, bathrobes and Molton Brown toiletries. Shower excellent, hot and adjustable. Dog pack ready for us in the room. The bar area is very welcoming, dogs made very welcome. Great choice of gins, Cruzcampo and real ales on tap, good choice of wines and spirits. Bar cozy and relaxing. Weather good, we sat outside, lovely seating area, covered with clear covering, just in case it rains. Clean and tidy. The black bull figure on the roof is beautiful and the church clock chimes on the hour, only after 7am though 😅. The open area makes it very easy to chat with other people if you want, we have met some friendly people and enjoyed the time to meet other tourists and locals. Table service for food outside. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This is our 5th time, made to feel like regulars by Janie and her team. Make us feel welcome and special. Great time at the Black Bull.

The lack of breakfast availability and the surprise on finding that the bar closed at 10pm on a Saturday evening marked an otherwise pleasant hotel down. The room was lovely and comfortable and despite being on the main road we were never bothered by road noise.

i get no pleasure writing this review ,but it is very honest ,my wife and i booked a table at the black bull. We did order a meal ,this did take some considerable time for the meal to arrive. i ordered a meat pie and chips ,not much meat inside ,but also extremly bland .my wife ordered a chicken salad again very bland , The bill came to over £55.00 for something you could buy from Aldi for £10.00. The building is bueatiful and extremly touristy ,but sadly quality of food poor service poor

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. I had a little accident on my way up to Moffat and the hotel manager took me to get my car wheel repaired in the morning for my onward journey. I couldn't thank him enough for the time and trouble he spent from his busy day. I've stayed at the hotel 4 times now and never been disappointed with the level /dedication or quality of service from this hotel. Thank you again for your time and patience.

Having stayed here a couple of years ago, when everything was fine, this time we were disappointed. Didn't appreciate they no longer do breakfast. Even though the weather was cold, we had to ask for the heating to be put on. The food in the restaurant was good but we had to wait an hour to get it after ordering and 80 mins from our booking time. Finally, in our King Garden room there was a very bright green ceiling light which lit up the room all night. Something to do with the smoke alarm I imagine but surely could be improved to be less intrusive.
