I stayed here a fortnight. Enjoyed my stay, but there were downsides. The worst was the state of the stairs. They weren’t just dirty but littered with feathers where pigeons were getting in. First time I saw someone hoovering the stairs was only after about 10 days of having to trample through the mess. Such was the grot that I felt too ashamed to invite friends and family to the apartment. The other thing was the noise. My room, no 10, faced the QClub, next to Harris Arcade, which produced a constant racket till 2 am most nights. I mention that in case someone who doesn’t know this part of town reads this–it’s the area for nightlife. But I knew that, so I brought earplugs and slept well. Worst thing about the room’s fittings was a cheap mat that wouldn’t flatten down. I rolled it out of the way under the bed. The furnishings were cheap, including a sort of fabric tent in lieu of a wardrobe. But the room did include two armchairs and a table, things you need for an extended stay. No coffee table, but I put an upside-down plate on the pouffe thing to make a platform for a mug. There was also a fan, useful during the stuffy nights. Another essential was the heated towel rail, which I used a lot. The shower was one of those with curved doors to save space: they didn’t close properly. The kitchenette was fine. It fit neatly into an alcove. The room was a decent size, and I didn’t feel cramped. The door and the street door were opened by codes, which saved carrying a key or key card around. There was nowhere to empty the waste bag–residents were dumping their bin bags outside the front door, which was unsightly. I shoved mine in a street litter bin instead–not ideal either–because I didn’t know when bin day was. Would I stay here again? All in all, no. But I enjoyed it. The room was livable and in a central spot that suited me.
