Hotel Hollweger

Hotel Hollweger did not disappoint on my second visit some years after the first. Frau Hollweger is ever present, the staff are wonderful and the hotel itself one of the best appointed. My partner and I were in the Annexe with lovely views of the mountains and vineyard, large room, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Food is fantastic and all the better for having such a view of Wolfgangsee whilst dining. The gardens are a delight and with the benefit of a swimming pool and spa treatments this hotel is impossible to beat in St. Gilgen. I have never stayed in a hotel where the personal touch is so evident; such a welcoming feeling. Cannot wait to go back soon.

If you are visiting the lovely town of St Gilgen, then this is the place to stay. This family-run hotel has superb facilities (pool, gym, spa, access to private lake bathing area) and excellent food, not to mention stunning lake views from your balcony. The staff are lovely and always welcoming and friendly. From the hotel is a pleasant short walk into the small town for access to the gift shops, lake (for boat trips), cable car and numerous walking paths in the area. Salzburg is only 50 minutes away by bus and the bus stop is right outside the hotel. I highly recommend this place.

In my long life, I have stayed in hundreds of so-called First Class and “executive” hotels around the globe for both business and leisure, but I can honestly say that the wonderful Hotel Hollweger in St Gilgen Austria is the place where I have genuinely felt the most relaxed, where you are treated as a trusted and respected guest throughout one’s stay. Family run by Gerda Hollweger and her friendly and efficient family members and staff who mostly speak English very well, the rooms and facilities are very comfortable, well-equipped to a high standard and spotlessly clean. The food is absolutely excellent with restaurant views over the beautiful Lake Wolfgang and surrounding mountains. A large buffet breakfast is included with room stay and there is a superb nightly buffet offering as well as an a la carte option. All guests have free access to the large swimming pool and spa area which offers various sauna and steam room facilities, there is even a hot-cold-hot footbath walk to improve foot circulation after a long day’s hiking! You also have a key to Hotel Hollweger’s private jetty on the lakeside which has a hot shower, toilet and a changing room, a perfect place for summer swimming into the crystal-clear lake water. There is also a gym inside the original hotel near the conference / seminar business area. The hotel has accommodation in three areas, the original hotel, the new block reached by an air bridge and also the “Das Lisl” Landhaus which is a separate building in the grounds; the hotel website has good photos showing all the options. Prices are very reasonable for the high quality of accommodation on offer. The location of Hotel Hollweger is excellent for exploring the Salzkammergut area (The Salzburg “Lake District”) as St Gilgen is equidistant between Salzburg and Bad Ischl on the very reliable 150 bus route. An essential tip is to download the “Salzburg Verkehr” app to check the exact bus times / connections, and you can buy the correct tickets on your phone, all in English, and you then just show the driver your phone ticket(s). Hotel Hollweger has plenty of car parking spaces and it’s a short stroll into the pretty and quiet town of St Gilgen on the lakeshore where you can get the boat ferry to places like St Wolfgang which has more shops and restaurants. The boat ferry also has a stop at the cog railway up the Schaffberg mountain for astounding views. St Gilgen also offers a fast and efficient modern cable car up the Zwolferhorn mountain. My wife and I are currently planning another visit to Hotel Hollweger, it is highly recommended.

Our 2nd week of our 2 centre holiday in Austria. We decided to stay once again in St. Gilgen and this was our hotel. What an excellent choice, we stayed in a very large room, with a balcony and a lake view. Very comfortable bed, large bathroom with bath / shower, toilet and B-day. Excellent and friendly staff who worked at this hotel, everyone from the receptionists, cleaners, to the waitering staff, all very friendly and could speak good English. It was nice to see the owner of the hotel helping her staff with everything. - well done. Although the Hotel is located on a hill overlooking St. Gilgen, there is a footpath which takes you directly down to the village centre and is quite an easy walk down, but it can be a bit of a hike backup. We used St. Gilgen as a base for visiting Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang, Salzburg and Fuschal-am-see. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

We stayed here for two weeks and we’re delighted with our stay. Lovely hotel. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Couldn’t fault the cleanliness. We had a room overlooking the rear garden which was ideal for our needs. The food was great with wide choice at breakfast. Choice of three main meals in evening which was quite sufficient. The only minor criticism is that the cold desserts choice, although fairly wide, remained very much the same throughout the two weeks but for shorter stays that shouldn’t be an issue. Would highly recommend!

We booked to visit Wolfgangsee just 6 weeks before arrival. We decided to try Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve) in Austria and so booked for a week. After some research we opted on St Gilgen and Hotel Hollweger. What an excellent decision that has proved to be. The hotel looks down the lake with excellent views and within a few minutes walk of the quaint small town of St Gilgen. The hotel has so much to commend it that it is difficult to know where to start. The bedroom was beautifully presented with the balcony looking down the lake simply stunning. Early in the morning the sunrise and welcoming church bells broke the dawn. The restaurant areas had the ambiance one hopes for. Then there was the much needed swimming pool and fitness areas. Vital to try and lose excess calories caused by the excellent cuisine. Arriving on 31 December it was unusual for us to be away from Scotland. However, the celebrating dinner, Sylvester, culminating with fireworks simply could not have been better. This family run hotel delivered a special night for everyone. We never book half board. However, after going out for dinner on 1 January we decided to switch to half board. A great decision. We know Austria well and whilst in winter Salzburg may be viewed as a snowy skiing location, this week showed that it is a region whatever the weather. It is readily apparent that the Hollweger family run the hotel to make a home from home for their guests. The team there make the atmosphere so welcoming. We look forward to returning.

We have just returned from a fabulous break at this amazing hotel it’s a easy 10 min walk to the village and ferry and the lake an area are beautiful But what made this holiday was the hotel we couldn’t fault it We had a lake view room which if you can I we throughly recommend spending the extra . the staff from housekeeping restaurant staff and front desk are exemplary they are attentive and you feel they are pleased to be there which says a lot about how the management treat there staff well and it shows in the service given Breakfast and evening meal was high quality with so much to choose from The spa area is wonderful clean and relaxing and there own private beach for lake swimming is a very special place take a picnic and spend some time relaxing there the private sauna takes 1 euro coins and the changing rooms bathroom and shower were of a very high standard would we recommend yes definitely would we go again yes please

Booked 14nights HB with Inghams, junior suite end June/July 2022. On arrival allocated room 118 on lower ground level, very dull, small with external door opening onto treacherous wet boarding, where my mother slipped, surrounded by a very high hedge. On enquiring at reception abruptly told no alternative room available, hotel full, told we had booked a mountain view room!!......no we booked a garden view. 1hr later luggage not yet delivered to room, on seeking it out at reception addressed room issue again, now reallocated to room 122 by hotel owner (Gerda). Big bright room in contrast to previous (floor window, no balcony or terrace). Bathroom floor dirty, long dark hairs, I was recovering from chemotherapy and my mother has very short silver hair. Repetitive evening meal, beef soup a very frequent feature. Lovely staff, Laura, Finn, Lily, Tanya. Sunny outdoor terrace for breakfast/evening meal, lovely view over lake. A very dog friendly hotel. Conference guests not courteous to hotel guests although this is not the responsibility of the hotel. Lovely cooked to order omlette option much preferable to the cold scrambled egg. Madame Hollweger Snr handled bread/rolls/pastries each & every morning. Location and views towards the lake are what sell it.

A great week here. The view from the room was spectacular. Each morning watching the clouds burn off. we were on half board with lots to go at. Afternoon cake was a good addition The staff always helpful. We found out that transport on a Friday is free in Austria for us oldies at least. We will be going again.
