SunBoo Beach Bungalows

When you plan your trip to Koh Rong Samloen (quieter than Koh Rong) you can choose to stay at Saracen Bay, Sunset Beach or two other places. We chose to stay with Sunboo Beach Resort at Sunset Beach and saw some other places. Saracen Bay is beautiful, but con- and destruction work is going on and exclusive resorts are situated next to party hostels. Sunboo beach is at Sunset Beach: a quiet beach with a couple of accommodations. Sunboo is def. your best choice of the whole island. Not only location, but also the host and staff are super friendly. Possibilities for bungalows, tents and a dorm. The vibe at Sumboo is the best. No de-and construction on this part of the island. Peace and rest and…. superbe yoga classes (and an exercise area for those who want to do some exercises themselves) for those who want to do Yoga. Definitely worth the 30 minute walk from tourist pier (without suitcase). And yes, a bit of that is quite steep, but you are not in a hurry, so do it slowly; you will still find it more than worth while!

We travelled as a family: Mom, dad and 9yo daughter. Our stay on Sunboo Beach Bungalows was near the end of our 2 months roundtrip in Asia. We stayed 6 nights in 2 bungalows. This review is about that experience and not the dorm rooms, which we have not seen. Where to start? Sunboo Beach Bungalows is more a sort of feeling and experience than just an accomodation. What you read in the other reviews is pretty accurate regarding the smaller details like the great food in the restaurant, the life close to a jungle with possible (and likely) experiences with wildlife, the mindblowing beach, awesome sunsets and truly amazing staff. But this place is something more that goes beyond these details. It is an authentic feeling and a vibe of something maybe soon lost. It has the ability to give you one of those rare experiences which really gives you a lifelong memory. It is not just another point on your travel itinerary - it is the chance of a adding an unforgettable experience to your journey! So don't hesitate - go!!!! Or you will possibly loose out on one of the most unique travelexperiences of your life.

Delightful beachfront stay. No frills, but if you are looking to get 'off the grid' this is it. Comfortable bungalows and exceptional hospitality, including terrific food. Very helpful team providing a genuinely eco-friendly option on an island that appears at risk of poor development. Get to Sunboo and Sunset Beach quick.

Probably the best place I had the privilege to went. I is the closest to paradise that is possible. The staf is super friendly, the food is just suberb. Strong recomend if you want to relax with super good food, excellent beach and extremely friendly staff.

After a full year abroad our family has found heaven. Sunboo is not for everyone- it's not lux and requires a hike but it is a special place. The group at Sunboo and the other businesses on Sunset Beach have created an incredible community. We feel lucky to have found it. The food is excellent and healthy, the beach is beautiful and secluded. There is rock climbing, kayaking, diving, yoga and snorkeling available. We spent a lot of days doing nothing. Cory, Nadia, Paolo and the entire staff treated all of us like friends. We can't wait to return.

We first stayed at Sunboo during the low-season last year, although it was quiet, we got the wonderful opportunity to spend time getting to know the managers Paolo and Cory. What an incredible job they have done with Sunboo. At the heart of Sunset Beach, it is the heart and soul of that stretch. The bamboo architecture of the bar/restaurant area is gorgeous, spacious and allows the breeze to flow through perfectly. The bungalows are adorable and very cool and comfortable, very well maintained and close to the water. The food is fresh and delicious, Paolo takes great care with selecting the best ingredients (I recommend the Red Snapper!). Yes it might seem pricey at first glance, but the beach is isolated and logistics are difficult, yet you are guaranteed the highest of quality and comfort at every moment as the team are extremely hospitable and take every care to make sure you feel at home during your stay. Saying this, you'll find the food and service to be on par with many top restaurants, as Paolo worked for years in hospitality in some top London establishments, you can really see how this has influenced his management of Sunboo, where you can find the perfect combination of beach bungalo and 5 star hospitality. We have returned time and time again to Sunboo and will continue to support what in our opinion is the best beach bungalow guesthouse in Cambodia.

We were staying at Saracen Bay and took the difficult hike to Sunset beach. The beach is amazing and has four bar/restaurants on. We walked the length of the beach and tried every one. The only one we were given a warm welcome in and had vegan options in was Sunboo. The people there were friendly, open to talking us through their menu and the options we could have as vegan and veggie. A marked difference between this place and the other places on the beach. I would highly recommend this place for the ambiance and the food.

This place might just be the closed I’ve been to paradise on earth. Okay I do admit to have a massive bias towards the beach, living close to one myself. Nevertheless my stay here was amazing. Paulo and Kira are beautiful people, a great team together and they make sure their guests feel completely comfortable and satisfied with their stay. They welcome every guest in a very personal way, which I highly appreciated. I stayed in a dorm for a week which was simple, providing everything one needs for a comfortable budget stay. The food is delicious, healthy and the most priciest at sunset beach. Don’t forget that everything has to be brought in by boat… Kira provides yoga classes every morning, directly on the beach in a wooden open house. Furthermore they provide snorkeling gear, hammocks and all the information you need to enjoy your stay. The restaurant (and the rest of the resort too btw) is very well designed and decorated, emphasizing the laidback beach atmosphere. Did I mention sustainable as well? Because that too is a big drive here. To get here you’ll have to put some effort into it. It’s a 40 minute easy to moderate hike from the main beach through the forest to the other side of the island of Koh Rong Sanloem, with a little climb in the middle. Though not without risks (some big rocks need to be negotiated) it’s doable for most people with easy to carry luggage. At Sunset beach there are other place to eat and stay as well.

We stayed at Sunboo for three nights, and it was great for our whole family who ranged in age from 5 to 75 years old. The location is spectacularly beautiful. Sunset Beach is some 600 meters long, with clear water and gorgeous sunsets. The beach doesn't have the party atmosphere that other beaches on the island might have, and so it was very family friendly. Only a handful of resorts occupy Sunset Beach, each small and easily accessible and with its own unique vibe. We all agreed, however, that we liked Sunboo's vibe best. The resort has several bungalows, all of which are exactly the same, differing only in proximity to the beach (even the furthest ones are only meters from the water!). Rooms are small and basic but well-appointed (e.g., one nice amenity is a high-end and natural local shampoo and soap), though we spent most of the day out at the beach. There is no air-conditioning aside from a fan, and there is no hot water, but neither bothered us. It was plenty cool in the evenings, and beds were fitted with mosquito nets to protect us. There is solar-powered electricity available throughout the day (unlike other resorts that cut it off for part of the day). We also appreciated that Sunboo has basic snorkeling equipment that can be used for free, as well as a selection of family friendly games. Indeed, we spent a good deal of time playing games in the common area where the restaurant is located. The atmosphere there is quite lovely at night. We did like having the option to eat at other resorts on the beach, but again, we agreed the food at Sunboo was the best, even if it might take a while to arrive (beach time!). Food prices were not unreasonable given the remote location and portion sizes were generous. There were plenty of options to satisfy all our tastes. A particular favorite were the pancakes. And any of the cocktails. ;) The managers are above-and-beyond attentive, making an effort to treat people like family (e.g., using first names, walking guests out at departure time). My dad had cut himself prior to our arrival, but when Paolo (one of the managers) saw him re-dressing the wound, he was quick to get his first aid kit and help my dad--all without being asked. These small, personal touches are what make Sunboo special. Much is written about the hike to Sunboo from Saracen Bay after you arrive by speedboat. We did not do the trek, but rather Sunboo instructed us to ride the speedboat to M'Pay Bay (on the northern part of the island), from where Sunboo had arranged a long-tail boat directly to the resort, for only a small cost which was paid directly to the boat captain. The ride took only 30-40 minutes. This was a great option for us with a young child and older adults. We'd return to Sunboo without hesitation; the kids are already asking when! It was a great spot for families, located on a stunningly beautiful beach. We highly recommend it.
