Lewis Mountain Cabins

We were pleasantly surprised at the condition of our cabin knowing that stays in national parks are often very basic. The cabin was a good size, clean and tidy and no evidence of mice mentioned in other reviews. The bathroom is quite basic and water pressure not that great but it is in a remote location. The position at mile 57 on skyline drive makes this a perfect location to explore the many overlooks and hikes locally. The setting and views are superb and we enjoyed the wealth of birdlife around the cabin. Come prepared for the rural setting. You need to bring your own food, cooler and drinks. Ice and firewood are sold onsite.

OK, it's a cabin in the middle of Shenandoah (good location) but there's no excuse for charging this kind of money for a place that has mice. They give a long speech when you check-in, warning you to store food properly but neglect to mention that even if you do, the mice will be running around all night - because they love the soap bars provided with the cabin. The proprietors need to hang a liquid soap dispenser instead and plug the holes letting in the critters. Better amenities in general (internet, bathroom) would also help.

FYI in April you need to arrive by 5pm! The store is where you check in and it closes at 5pm. I was lucky to show up at 4:50. The cabins are rustic and kinda dirty so have your expectations adjusted accordingly. I was hoping since they just opened they would be clean but there was dust on the headboard. They have a pod coffee maker in the room. I had brought instant coffee but was happy not to need it. A dog friendly cabin in the middle of skyline drive was worth the $200 after taxes. It’s pricey but location,location,location. Check out the short trail up Lewis mountain from back of campground.

Room was VERY dirty, dust hanging off the ceiling fan, old spider webs, mice were trying to chew through the wall and holes were everywhere. On the positive side, it was very quiet and I liked the patio out back with the fire pit and picnic table.

I rented a no-frills cabin at the Lewis Mountain Compound. I got cabin 15. While I think that staying at this cabin could be a lot of fun in the wintertime when shared with other hikers, it should be avoided in the summertime. There is absolutely no ventilation, the rug on the floor was covered in mice feces. I am aware that it is bear country but they can add a skylight that opens or fix the high windows that do exist and put bars on the lower windows which are currently boarded up. I could not breathe once the door was closed. The smell from the stove and musk from the mice was too much. Very very dirty. I slept in my car and left 2 days early. AVOID.

We had a restless mouse end up driving us out of our room, as it made so much noise running up and down the walls, along the window sill and the dresser we couldn't sleep. On top of that, it was a hot night in July and the ceiling fan broke, making the experience even worse. I get that we're in nature and there are going to be critters scurrying around the place, but they shouldn't be IN the cabin. The cabins aren't designed to be the lap of luxury, but that is not an excuse for what happened to us that night. According to the staff the Park service limits how they can combat these pests but this experience was unacceptable.

These cabins are fully equipped with electric heat, a back up space heater, jot water, toilet, sink, shower, a closet, lots of outlets, (power), and a keureg machine with pods and creamers and sugar. Bed was comfy and they provide four pillows and a comforter. BYO fire wood. Even the outside covered picnic area as electric lighting. There is a little shop where you can buy eggs, milk, etc. Very friendly and cozy spot!

We have been visiting and staying in Shenandoah National Park for over 20 years and the value since Delaware North took over in 2013 has definitely declined. This was our 2nd time in one of the Lewis Mtn. Cabins so we knew it was not a "luxury" cabin. However, the pricing is way out of line with the amenities. Food selection, service and other amenities has also declined at Big Meadows Wayside. We realize that some of this is due to covid and other factors beyond their control but they are pricing themselves out of the reach of many. The new outside dining terrace at Skyland is nice but why are the "high" tables in front of the views of the lower tables to the rear? And, why was it necessary to re-arrange the gift shop there? We used to stay for 2-3 days every year but now only spend one night, if that. Hopefully, things will improve as covid diminishes and immigration policies (for temporary workers) are relaxed.

Outstanding cabin! A bit above primitive, it has heat, hot water, power and lights. A bit less than modern, still a small bathroom with low water pressure. But that's why you go, to get away and not be bothered. There is sporadic, at best, cell coverage, so you're really disconnecting here. The unit does not have refrigeration but you can find ice at the concessionaire if yours runs out. If you choose to cook, you will cook on an open flame, but the firepit does have a grill above it so you can place pots or pans, I don't recommend placing food directly on it without a thorough cleaning (lots of soot and charcoal on it). The area is natural and clean, there are bears in the vicinity so be sure to use the bear box (right next to the fire pit) to store your food or put it in your car (do NOT put it in your room or the critters will find it). Lewis Mtn is miles away from the other areas but that's a good thing, it is also the smallest area so there aren't many people there even when all the cabins are occupied. Our heater was noisy, the hot water pressure was low and the bed was a little old and soft for our taste, otherwise, the cabin, location and amenities are damn near perfect for a weekend or weeklong getaway. Highly recommend!
