May 15-16, 2024 From the moment we saw photos of this special place on the internet, we knew we had to stay here! The natural rock onsen baths caught our imagination - and our stay was wonderful beyond expectations! The resort is located in a forested valley is stunning, next to a rushing river. Natural mountain hot spring water is channeled into 7 lovely outdoor onsen baths, as well as ensuite baths. The facility is beautifully designed with gardens and multi-level suites, with each of the levels looking out to the river, with plenty of seating to enjoy the relaxing and lovely views. We were treated with limitless thoughtful hospitality from the moment we arrived, to the moment we left - in fact, one of our group kept commenting ”the y[the staff] must think we're really special!”. The suite was beautifully appointed with tatami mats, traditional Japanese decor, comfortable beds, yukata and slippers are provided along with tabi socks and plenty of clean linens. Our suite had its own private onsen bath encircled by natural stones, and constantly running hot spring water. Such a contrast to water-parched California and even Hawaii where we're from! The outdoor onsens are open all night, for viewing of the starry night sky. The kaiseki dinner was exceptional, with many many delicious small plates, each exquisitely prepared and presented - a petite, freshly caught local fish was skewered as if swimming and roasted in a salt shell. Utterly delicious! In the morning, after a similarly wonderful breakfast, we experienced a mochi-pounding session with the hotel staff and guests joining in - lots of fun - photos were provided! Transportation - It was a challenge figuring out how to get to this place - finally, we had a Japanese-speaking hotel clerk call the resort, and got instructions for the 1-hour bus ride from Takayama bus station to Shinhotaka Onsen / Nakao Kou-gen-guchi. There are buses running every hour! We walked to the resort from the bus stop when we arrived, and a shuttle van to the bus stop was thoughtfully provided by the resort when we left. Wonderful guest house, full of interesting artefacts and traditional Japanese trinkets. Traditional stay with modern amenities. Our family of 4 loved our stay here during April 2024. The owners are very welcoming into their home and they go to a lot of effort to make our stay happy and comfortable. A traditional Japanese Breakfast meal is provided. The food is delicious and plentiful. Sleeping is Japanese style on tatami mats and comfortable futon mattresses. The rooms and beds are warm and cosy, even when it is cold outside. The bathrooms are clean and modern, and the hot bath was a very welcome relief from the days of walking. The location is very convenient with a 1 minute walk to the Miyagawa morning markets and other interesting locations. The house is an easy 15 minute walk to Takayama station. Highly recommend. We loved our stay here!

The room is a lot bigger than I expected it to be. I could open my (clamshell-type) luggage fully and still have space to walk!! The hostel is located about a 10min walk, down a straight main road, away from the train/bus station/terminal. Not exactly a pleasant walk in the summer heat, but for the price I gave it no mind. Am very thankful that the hostel has an elevator, saved me from having to lug my luggage up the stairs. It’s also such a sweet touch for the hostel staff to left a sweet (handwritten) welcome message on the bedside table! Takayama is rather walkable city, so it wasn’t troublesome to get to most of the tourist spots on foot!

跟日本一般商旅比，空間寬敞，很有懷舊日式風情，相對意味設施較老舊些，但環境頗為乾淨，飯店內也有男、女湯可泡，喜歡泡早湯的朋友可在0930前使用，飯店就在濃飛巴士站後方（步行約2分鐘），退房時，因為活動範圍在平湯周遭，所以飯店很貼心讓我們寄放行李（申し訳ありませんが、私たちは303号室のテナントで、高山行きのバスに乗らなければならないので、カウンターのスタッフが見つからないときは、自分で預けた荷物を持って行き、カウンターにメッセージを残しました、ありがとう!），另外這件飯店是屬於別館，入住時會給一張（每人）本館的泡湯卷，本館位於濃飛巴士站正前方（步行約3分鐘），本館湯池有室內及室外，室外湯池造景優美，泡湯當晚氣溫較低又下著雨，泡湯感覺更為舒爽，下次有機會會再造訪

過春節的時候入住的，隔了好久才評論，也是想給定這家温泉酒店的客人做個參考。由於冬天去的，還遇上十年一遇的雪災，回名古屋衹有JR可以做，有點狼狽。但是酒店在一片白色雪的環境下，讓人放鬆自在。温泉有個一個大的公用的温泉，是室內的池子，還有室外的，但是太冷了，不想嘗試。另外還有2個私湯也是室外，怕冷沒去。温泉是真温泉，沒有漂白粉的味道，就是温泉的怪怪的味道。而且是直掛的，一直有水流出。因為入住後就洗洗泡了下，之後晚上又去了一次，發現物品都整理歸位好了。晚上出來的時候發現前台小姐姐抱着物品走進去整理，感覺服務真的到位啊。晚飯很不錯，量非常大！早飯有點不適合我這個中國胃，冷食居多，日式特色吧。還有晚飯是在大廳集中吃的，應該開了地暖，整個空間非常暖和，要知道外面鵝毛大雪冷的狠啊。然後走的時候前台還會提醒回高山的班車時間，服務比城市裡酒店的好太多了。可能言語不通，需要翻譯器，溝通沒那麼流暢，但基本沒啥問題。不過酒店真的算在荒郊野外，前不着村後不着店的。離店站在站台等大巴的時候真的有點怕怕的，靠山的1號站台（8:14那班）還有個熊出沒的標誌，嚇**了。也是因為大雪，班車大巴沒有準時到，晚了20分鐘，等的我都焦慮死了，腦子裡已經瘋狂想着各種對策，還好大巴慢慢的開過了，真鬆了口氣。整體的温泉酒店一泊兩食行程還是很滿意。

A very nice place with a warm feeling, beginning with the kind staff. Gerard specially is a wonderful host. The kitchen is great, big and full equipped. I loved the small garden and the dinning or resting place full of board games. There is also a traditional Japanese stove to cook for rent. Location is good. If I need to name one disadvantage I could say that both the beds and floors are noisy while moving. I tried not to but every step or movement in the bed was heard. Of course, it’s an old house and makes sense but still is the only thing I could say, the rest perfect and 100% recommended. Even the other guests were all fun.

Absolutely perfect for backpackers!! It was although expected because japanese believe in providing quality to their guests and they proved it.

Staying at Hostel Miyagawa by Murasaki Ryokan was truly one of the highlights of my trip — an unforgettable experience that beautifully blended comfort, tradition, and hospitality. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed into a warm, peaceful atmosphere that reflected the essence of a traditional Japanese ryokan. The design of the space is charming and authentic, with thoughtful touches that bring out the beauty of Japanese culture. Everything from the tatami rooms to the meticulously clean facilities made the stay incredibly comfortable. What truly made it special, though, was the feeling of calm and connection to local traditions that this place offers. It’s more than just a place to sleep — it’s a cultural experience in itself. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to immerse themselves in an authentic and beautiful ryokan stay.

This place was absolute amazing! By far our favorite place from our whole trip. The location was absolutely perfect for the Takyama festival. We were literally right there with shops and street vendors 50 yards away and the parades would have been right there as well if they weren't canceled due to rain. The rooms were humble and traditional and really added to the experience. The tea in the room was exceptionally good and the traditional Japanese breakfast they served was also delicious and fun to eat. We didn't even know they had a legitimate hot spring on site, but they did! They are Japanese style baths so be ready for that, but the water was therapeutic and so relaxing. I cant recommend this place enough and I would absolute make it a point to visit Takyama and stay here again for a few days on our next trip to Japan. They were such great kind hosts. And I cant believe the price, what an great value. Do yourself a favor and stay here. I'm not sure why the other bad reviews are here I read some of them and they sound like entitled stupid American tourists so ignore them and stay here.
