Once in a while, we have the rare privilege of staying somewhere that exemplifies all that is good about travel. Nguluko is one such place. As the photos suggest, the hotel is beautifully designed. It’s a zen-like, modern annex, connected to Liusan’s generational home. What a curious privilege it is, to be able to join her family around the home’s traditional Naxi courtyard for a bonfire dance, before retreating upstairs to a room of luxurious comforts, including an actual Dyson hairdryer and electronic toilet. But more important is what the photos cannot capture. In an age of faceless travel, dominated by flavourless hotel chains and mass-produced group tours, it’s rare to be able to feel a connection with folks eager to share a little slice of their life with you. Whether it be a morning stroll around the old village, a sharing session on Naxi culture and Dongba script, or even the aforementioned bonfire dance (replete with lived-in details like the family’s aging hams dangling off the awnings), it harkens back to a more serendipitous style of travel that made me smile. Even meals (all-inclusive!) are a chance to experience local culture. Locally foraged bracken and morels make an appearance, as do different varieties of liangfen, and Lijiang-style baba. There’s also the most moreish chicken hotpot — which I was going to drive out of the way to Luguzhen to try — but which she ended up serving for dinner on the second night. I’m quite obsessive when it comes to food, and yet everything I wanted to try here, except perhaps the rainbow trout and yak, were cooked up and served. Some small things could be improved: many stairways lack railings for the mobility impaired, and the ‘October’ room has an odd bathroom design where the toilet cubicle barely has space to close when one is seated. But such issues pale in comparison to the overall experience. Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give it is that in a world filled with a million wonderful destinations, this is one place I would choose to return to.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing experience at this accommodation. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with incredible views. First of all, the staff were exceptional – they were incredibly welcoming and attentive. They are also warm and friendly. The lady boss took photos for us and offered us drinks every night. Breakfast and afternoon tea was provided everyday. Any concerns will be attended to via our wechat group. Secondly, The room was spacious, clean, and beautifully designed, but the highlight has to be the bathtub with a view. The standalone bathtub overlooking the landscape was the ultimate touch of luxury and relaxation — it’s like having a private spa with nature as your backdrop. The room offered a breathtaking view of the mountains, and waking up to the stunning mountain view every morning felt surreal. Besides that, the surrounding area is peaceful and quiet – perfect for unwinding. I would totally recommend it and will be returning for sure!

We had an amazing stay at Pauline. Definitely a top choice to get away from the hustle and bustle of Lijiang. It’s located in Yuhu village that is quieter and smaller but the surrounding is super peaceful and chill. We loved the view from our room where we can see the courtyard as well as the snow mountain. Our room in Pauline is super beautiful and comfortable and we wished we stayed longer than two nights. The staff in Pauline are also very helpful and friendly to us, making sure that we know where to go and are well taken care of. Breakfast in the hotel is also very good, and it was served in their very beautiful and comfortable cafe area. The cats are also very cute. Highly recommend for people who wants to have a quiet getaway but still close enough to the tourist sites.

Have a very pleasant stay here for 2 nights. The room was clean, comfortable and well maintained with all the amenities provided. Staff were very helpful and friendly. They even provided us free laundry service which is hardly find in other hotel. Furthermore, they gave us tea as complementary gift before we check out too 😊 Hotel provided free breakfast and tea session and hot milk at night too. Free transport to 白沙古镇 is available as well as free pickup/drop off to airport. The location is very convenient if you were travelling to 玉龙雪山 which is less than 30 minutes drive. The environment was quiet and suitable for good rest after a long day of travel. I would definitely recommend it to travelers and would consider staying here again on my next visit.

Highly highly recommend this stay. One of the best hotel stay i ever had. Hotel was super clean and new, as advertised on the photograph. Fantastic view of the mountain. Room facilities were superb, there was really nothing i could have asked for better. The most outstanding aspect is the service. As foreigners in china, we relied almost exclusively on the front desk for everything. Its like having a 24hr concierge/ butler. They booked drivers for us, helped us find cheaper alternatives, even offered to cook for us outside office hours because we are coming back late. You will be send to and fro the baisha old town via a buggee with no waiting time at all. Every night, there is a campfire, BBQ ,fireworks exclusively for the hotel guess. For ppl with kids, they have cute little lambs around their yard (cordon off but accessible).

This was honestly the best boutique hotel i have ever stayed. The hospitality of this hotel was incredible and absolutely off the charts. First, there was a dedicated driver to pick you up and to send you to Lijiang train station. Next, the room we got was just breathtaking, with the incredible view of Yulong Snow Mountain. Everything was modern and high-tech, from lighting controls to the toilet/shower and has great amenities. There is also a nice group chat where they update you on Breakfast, Tea time and late night nourishments. The hosts/service crew were very attentive, and always made sure we were well taken care of, by going above and beyond. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and very, very impressed.

Our family of four stayed in the Mountain View Family Room at Kui Ran Snow Mountain Resort from 24 to 28 December. This was a rather spur-of-the-moment booking on Trip.com, and while we had seen photos of the resort beforehand, nothing quite prepared us for the genuinely warm and personalised experience that awaited us, and the amazing view! Even before our arrival, the young and enthusiastic team reached out via WeChat to ensure a smooth check-in. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel completely at home. Every encounter — whether with management, kitchen staff, or the housekeeping ah yees — was met with friendly greetings and heartfelt small talk. What truly stood out was the personalised chat group created for our stay. Through it, we received thoughtful and detailed updates each day: breakfast menus, nightly bonfire timings, homemade supper featuring warm desserts, and even morning messages letting us know when the skies were clear so we wouldn’t miss the snow-capped mountains at their most magnificent. Breakfast was a colourful spread with plenty of options, and a special mention goes to the friendly barista who patiently prepared complimentary warm drinks for us each day — we were truly spoilt for choice. A big thank-you to the entire Kui Ran team. Apart from 小九, whom we spoke with daily, I was too shy to ask for the names of the other attentive and perpetually cheerful staff. Thank you for making the final days of our Yunnan trip so welcoming and memorable. I will definitely be recommending Kui Ran to friends and family — it is truly a hidden gem.

The food throughout our stay was delicious as well. What really sets this hotel apart are the activities they offer: kayaking, horseback riding, mushroom picking, pine cone DIY crafts, bonfire parties, and more. It’s not just a stay, but a whole experience filled with fun and culture. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Lijiang and YuLongo—you’ll leave with wonderful memories!
