I've been to 4 different onsen hotels in this area over the last 3 years to enjoy the onsen; I had a good impression of Okuhida Onsenkyo area until I went to Yumoto Choza. I've never experienced such rude service in Japan and will never return to this hotel again. I am a woman traveling with a 2-year-old this time, and I had three pieces of luggage. After checking out, there was no one in the lobby to help; I had to get the car from parking to about 10 meters away from the entrance and take the luggage into the car. The lobby had two stairs, so I had to step on one of them with one foot, to get my suitcase. The receptionist lady, was running out and shouting at me in Japanese, knowing that I didn't understand, in a loud and rude manner, obviously saying something nasty, blaming me for my one shoe on her stairs. I've never seen such kind of manner in any Japanese Ryokan. I was so angry by her attack that I was shaking in tears, her focus should have been on having the right service level that matches the price I paid, or simply rejecting the reservation of all foreign guests who might need a shoe to go on snow. there are enough onsen hotels with much better service than this one. No need to get yourself humiliated with Yumoto Choza . the restaurant had good staff.
