My family and I had a pleasant experience staying at New Silk Road and would recommend it for budget minded travelers visiting Xilinhot.
We booked the two bed family room and found it reasonably clean and supplied. While outdoor temperatures were in the 30s, the room’s AC was effective and brought room temperature down to a manageable 23C. The hotel’s location is a bit off the beaten path and required a little meandering to find.
Check in was fairly smooth. We had prepaid for the room online and the receptionist quickly found our reservation and after registering our ID’s and we were on our way to our room. Part of my family travels by passport and this hotel accepts and registered foreign guests. The hotel asked for a 100RMB cash deposit which was returned to me when I checked out.
Bottled water was provided and supplementary 2L’s were available for purchase at a reasonable price. Complimentary toiletries were provided. Plastic shower shoes were available and water temp was hot.
A few items to note for travelers. The hotel is located on the 10th/11th floors of a building with many other businesses. Several of the rooms on our floor were occupied by long term tenants which was surprising at first. Room numbers aren’t labeled or assigned in a logical manner and probably were assigned as long term rentals were freed up. Breakfast/kitchen is located on the east wing of the 11th floor. The spread was simple, but sufficient.
Four areas where the hotel could use improvement. 1) It was impossible to reach the front desk via the room phone. I had to instead look up its contact number via the Trip app. Calls that number were answered within two rings. 2) The room floors could use a thorough vacuuming. Compared to the disaster of a hotel where we stayed during our first evening in Xilinhot, the room was immaculate but the floor could use more care. Slippers were provided so it wasn’t a bit deal. 3) While the elevator has access control, it has not been turned on. I presume that the mixed use floors may prevent access from being effectively controlled - the stairwells were wide open. 4) The wifi speed could use a serious bump. We ended up using our 4G China mobile connection during the stay.
For business travelers, the rooms do not have a safe.
Overall, our stay was good enough that we extended our stay by a day.
