Quintinha São João Hotel & Spa

Just a lovely place to base a holiday in Madeira in. The staff were endlessly helpful and always friendly and unhurried . The restaurant served reasonably priced excellent food all served by knowledgeable, friendly front of house staff , The beautifully maintained gardens were a joy to spend time in with a surprisingly good variety of birds and butterflies to enjoy and photograph.

This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. The room was beautifully furnished with comfortable bedding and nice towels and the general areas are very well kept. Indeed, there was a bit of painting going on while we were there without too much inconvenience for the guests. The pool area was also very nice. Breakfast was excellent. We did have one dinner at the hotel restaurant with most items done slightly more than we prefer it. Good wine list and wine recommendation on the other hand. Centre of Funchal is walkable, though beware it is uphill on the return.

My wife and I have just returned from this lovely hotel for the 5 th time (& 2 nd so far this year). We can honestly say that this is the best hotel we have ever had the pleasure to stay at. The rooms are excellent and are a great size and are kept spotlessly clean. The decor and ambience of the whole hotel is beautiful, with lovely antique furniture. Staff in all aspects of the hotel are so professional and friendly. The choice of food for both breakfast and evening meal is superb. The restaurant quality of food is absolutely 5 star and served by such professional staff who go out of their way to ensure you are enjoying your meal. Felipe, Eduardo, Alexander and Rada in the restaurant all work very hard, constantly filling the breakfast buffet etc. The ambience is so tranquil and the tables are beautifully dressed with lovely table linen and cutlery. We feel that Jet2 do not recommend the hotel and the restaurant highly enough on the booking website. We cannot forget to mention Rosie in Guest Relations who is always on hand to offer advice on walks and and any other activities you wish to do. She also provides bus timetables etc. Sitting in the area outside the bar in the beautiful garden setting is so relaxing and tranquil and you have the benefit of the daily happy hour. My wife had a massage from Daniella (during our January stay) & she found it so relaxing. We are very much looking forward to our next stay during November this year. Thanks very much once again for such an enjoyable stay. The staff are such a credit to the owner Andre. I apologise for my previous Trip Advisor review where I spelled Andre incorrectly. We are always recommending the Quintinha de Sao Joao to others, however, perhaps we should stop doing this as it may result in us not being able to book for ourselves.

Wonderful small hotel,charming staff,comfy bed,plentiful and varied breakfast buffet. Daily bus transfer into town very welcome.taxis back up cheap and easily available. Rosie arranged some lovely trips around the island including a memorable Levada walk. What more do you need. Have just booked to come back next year for two weeks. Thank you everyone at Quintinha

One of the most delightful small hotels we have stayed in. Spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated with great attention to detail. All staff from the chamber maid to the general manager are friendly and efficient. Food very good. Courtesy bus going into Funchal and returning twice a day.

The Quintinha Sao Joao Hotel is a real gem. Lovely surroundings, spacious rooms and beautiful furniture. Great staff who are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. The hotel made our visit to Madeira all the more memorable.

QSJ is an outstanding hotel located overlooking Funchal, 15 mins from the centre. The rooms and public spaces are to a high standard, helpful staff. The bedrooms are spacious and well equiped. We both ate in the hotel resturant and local dining places 10 minutes away opposite the ******. Would recommend QSJ as a 1st choice in Funchal.

We love this hotel! It is a really comfortable home-from-home very well positioned near the centre of Funchal. It is family-owned and all staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Highlights include the generously sized bedrooms with extremely comfy beds, excellent food (fresh fruit and walnut pancakes for breakfast a particular favourite), happy hour in the bar to start when you choose and the choice of inside and an outside swimming pool. There is a dedicated member of staff to help you plan activities across this stunning island; this personal touch ensures you choose wisely from the array on offer.

Another tranquil break at this amazing Hotel My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week break at this lovely hotel for the third time. We were given a lovely welcome from Caterina and Maura on reception, before being taken to our room by Caterina who helped to carry our luggage. As always, all rooms and all areas of the hotel are kept spotless by the excellent cleaning staff. The reception staff are very helpful, including the 2 girls mentioned above, together with Pedro and Zara. The food in the restaurant is always excellent, served by friendly, pleasant and professional staff. Felipe, Mathias, Eduardo, Alexander, Athena and Rada, who all go out of their way to ensure that you have a lovely dining experience. The ambience in the restaurant is so relaxing and tables etc are dressed with beautiful linen and cutlery which enhances the fine dining experience. My wife says that the thing that keeps her going when out her morning runs (whilst running up the last hill to the hotel! ) is the thought of the excellent breakfast. The restaurant has recently started a new initiative on Friday nights whereby, the chefs prepare the food in front of you. This is really appreciated as it gives you a chance to thank the chefs who work behind the scenes making delicious food. Special mention also to Rosie in Customer services who is so helpful and goes out of her way find challenging walks etc and activities to do, even printing off bus timetables. She really is so enthusiastic and spends a lot of time researching things for us. The bar staff are also very pleasant. Sitting next to the area outside the bar in the afternoon is so relaxing and has a tranquil atmosphere, where you can sit and enjoy a drink and a snack if you feel peckish, in a beautiful garden setting. The hotel was celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year and they offered us an orchid to plant in the garden which was a lovely touch, as we were also celebrating our Wedding Anniversary. We have already booked to return in January and are counting the days until then. Thanks very much once again for such an enjoyable stay. The staff are a credit to the hotel owner, Andreas. We thoroughly recommend the Quintinha São Joao hotel and suggest eating in the restaurant as you are unlikely to find food anywhere which is as delicious and such a wide choice as in this hotel.
