The following is the copy of an email sent a week ago to Britannia hotels main email address. To date, I have received no response but neither did I expect one. - I'd like to tell you of our experience of staying at the Palace Hotel, Buxton. 13th and 14th September, 2022. On arrival at the hotel one cannot fail to be impressed by this fine old building with fitting décor in the entrance lobby and communal area. Unfortunately, this is where the impressiveness ends. Check in – 3 or 4 stations at the reception desk, only 1 manned. Thankfully we were 2nd in line and on glancing behind us when it was our turn saw about 30 people behind us queuing out of the glass doors and back to the revolving door. No welcome from the receptionist and I was quite surprised that when I asked about using my card for charges to our room for wine etc. was told that you pay as you go. Not quite what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Booked a table for dinner – we were booking in at 4 pm but the earliest option for a table was 8.30 pm. Our Room – we had booked an executive twin room and whilst the room was spacious it lacked character and was in fact quite sp**** . We understood that there was no room service but assumed this would be for change of towels, little did we know that there would be no emptying of bin or replenishment of tea/coffee/milk and sugar. No guest information folder in the room, which we would expect to find. Dining – dinner. 4 staff ( I won't give them the title of waiter/waitress/hostess as it would be doing a disservice to those who do this role properly) at the desk at the front of the restaurant and given a menu and taken to a table. We were given to understand that meals were buffet style but the comment from the staff member who had taken us to our table who told us it was self service we found her description was more realistic. In actual fact for the help that was given throughout our stay you might as well have trays situated at the front because the service is more akin to a poorly run motorway service station. That again is giving a disservice as there is a far better selection of food on offer there. We asked for wine menu and were told it was in the menu folder, it wasn't. The staff member said she'd get one, took the menu away and neither were seen again. We opted for soup which we had to help ourselves to from an electric soup tureen, after we asked what it was. After one mouthful, found it was lukewarm so took it back to another staff member who took the soup bowls from me saying she'd tell chef. Well, that helped a lot didn't it as neither of these were seen again either! We had to have the pate or salad as these were the only other things on offer as a starter. Back up to the hot cupboards for our main course – on offer, 1 choice of roast - turkey, fish in sauce which looked as though that had been there for the whole of the service time and a sweet potato curry. I was surprised after reading reviews I wasn't expecting much but yes it did have a bit of a smell in the room but everywhere was bright and cheerful the staff where fantastic and food great.. slightly annoyed at paying £7 for WiFi in the room but it was a fair price for the hotel and taxi to the airport was booked for me the cost was £15 The door to the room had to be slammed and I think this was a problem with alot of them judging by the constant slamming of Doors throughout the night but all in all not as terrible As expected also a nice location not too noisy and actually some grounds to walk in ..don't be put off by reviews if you want cheap and cheerful.

An excellent base for an early train from Crewe station. Friendly staff, superb food and lovely pool . Rooms could do with a refresh - looking a bit dated. Perfectly adequate for our needs though with tea and coffee and the usual iron, hairdryer etc. As it was on the ground floor, you could only open the windows a tiny bit, so it would become very warm in the summer even with the fan that was provided. I do think that air conditioning should be standard in all hotels now. Access to the pool was quite restrictive with specific times but the pool area was lovely although the steam room was out of order. Access to the full spa was at extra cost. The Stables Grill was excellent - food, service and cocktails - couldn’t fault and the breakfast equally as nice. Would definitely stay here again.

Great receptionist who was very welcoming and friendly. Good location for access to the A500 and A34 roads as well as a bus stop only a 5 minute walk away. Unfortunately, the hotel itself is very dated and lack on soundproofing between the rooms is a major issue. I could hear the guy in the room below talking and could also hear the room next door opening and closing their toilet seat! I was awoken at 1am with an inconsiderate neighbour with their tv on very loud and coughing loudly. There is a main wing and smaller wing to the side. I stayed on the 1st floor in the main wing but I would recommend you ask for the 1st floor in the small wing to minimise the number of people around you and source of external noise. View from the room was nice however.

The hotel does not have its own airport shuttle, so you need to book the shuttle online. It’s about £3.60 per adult, and there’s no night shuttle! To get to the hotel from T2 Terminal, you can take the overpass trail from T2 Terminal. First go to the train station, then go downstairs, exit the gate on the first floor of the station towards T1, cross the road where there is a pedestrian signal, and go towards Clayton Hotel Walk in the opposite direction and cross the road at the first pedestrian crossing signal you encounter. At this point, you can follow the trail in a circle, or you can go directly across a dirt road to the side of the road. At this time, you can see the Crown Plaza Hotel. Follow the trail to reach the hotel. The whole journey takes twenty minutes. If you come out of Terminals T1 and T3, you don't need to take the overpass, but you still need to cross two sections of road. For those who come to Manchester City for the first time, it is indeed a test! In addition, the cleanliness of the hotel rooms can be said to be worthy of four-star standards! But don’t expect a hotel room to be that spacious! Except the TV is a bit big compared to the size of the room. You can basically only watch programs like BBC on TV. Programs that require an Internet connection, such as YouTube, can sometimes connect to the Internet and sometimes cannot! Netflix and other online media require registration and payment! The free WI-FI provided by the hotel is relatively fast when it can be connected to the Internet. The key is that it often fails to connect. I don't know if it is because of too many customers! The standard of this network cannot match the four-star level! The hotel breakfast is typical British style. The daily menu does not change, and you can eat as early as 5:30, which is more friendly for passengers catching an early flight!
