Fantastic hotel, super friendly and helpful owner! If you want a unique, homely stay in the thick of Shanghai happenings - this is the place. It was exactly what I was looking for, a local homestay vibe - not a sterile, squeaky clean hotel. The owner has really made the experience easy, unique and enjoyable - firstly, Shanghai lane houses (shikumen) are not easy to find from the street. They have gate entrances at street level, and you wander in to find the exact house. The owner made things a lot easier but putting a big sign of the hotel name above the laneway gate, which is especially helpful if you're trying to find the place at night. It keeps getting better from there: the owner has prepared recommended walking routes around the area, places to eat for traditional Shanghainese cuisine, and is always happy to help with any questions or advice.
The place itself is a lovely old laneway house, you can really feel the character of the years gone by. The decor is a mix of classic, quirky, and historic - the cleanliness could improve a little, but it's hard with old houses so they're doing a great job to keep the history alive! The local community in the shikumen don't seem to mind that they have a small hotel in their complex, and it's great to be see what daily Shanghai life looks like. I sadly only stayed for one night passing through Shanghai, but would definitely return again - highly recommend for an authentic accommodation experience with an owner who really cares about your stay, and at a reasonable price for the super central area (< 10-min walk from People's Square park / Nanjing Rd / metro stations, ~15-min to the Bund area). For my next stay, I would make sure to choose a room with a window to watch the lively goings-on nearby!
