"A good option for traveling around the island, nice breakfast and dinner. Coin laundry is very convenient for hikers. Sometimes one side of the island is cloudy while the other is sunny, so I recommend checking the live cameras to not miss a great view."

Hotel Rishiri ★★★

📍 Fujimicho-90-90 Kutsugata, 利尻町沓形, Rishiri

"The hotel for the second day of our 3-night, 4-day trip to Sapporo is Hotel Rishiri, located on Rishiri Island. After flying for about an hour from Sapporo Okadama Airport to Rishiri Airport, we take a shuttle bus that we booked in advance by phone and travel another 11 kilometers to reach the hotel. Since we are taking a 3:00 PM flight, we check into the hotel around 4:15 PM. Dinner can be chosen from 6:00 PM, 6:30 PM, or 7:00 PM, so we select 6:30 PM. We go to Rishiri-cho Yakuba, which is a 7-minute walk away, to pick up a manhole card. Secoma is open from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and since it is located between the hotel and Yakuba, we stop by there on the way back to buy some late-night snacks. We return to the room around 5:30 PM, turn on the heating, and warm up the room. While the temperature in Seoul reportedly soared to 32 degrees that day, the night here in Rishiri hit 3 degrees, making it feel no different from winter. After resting in my room, I joined the dinner at 6:30 PM. It was served as a set meal resembling a Kaiseki multi-course meal. Although tempura was omitted, cheese cream croquettes filled the void. Steak and Rishiri's specialty, fresh sea urchin (uni), were provided in an amount equivalent to scooping out a single chestnut. It was enough to make me think that if this were made into sushi, it would yield about one set (two pieces). It brings back memories from my visit to Rishiri 13 years ago. I paid either 800 or 1,000 yen to get off at a place resembling a "Haenyeo's House" (female diver's house) on a bus tour, where they cut the uni on the spot with scissors, placed it in a basket, and I scooped it up with a spoon while watching the antics of the sea otter friends. Since then, I have encountered Rishiri uni a couple more times when visiting Michelin-starred sushi restaurants in Hokkaido, but this is the first time I have seen such a large quantity of sea urchin roe. The fresh sea urchin alone is reason enough to stay here. After enjoying a delicious dinner, I visited a sunset spot that was just a 10-minute walk away. Although I couldn't see the sunset as it was obscured by clouds, it was a moment sufficient to appreciate the beauty of Rishiri's red twilight. Afterwards, I enjoyed the hot springs, which close at 11 PM. It features an open-air bath where you can face the sea and hear the sound of the waves. Returning to my room, I quietly enjoyed the night in Rishiri with the "Sekoma 1,000 Yen Happiness." It was quiet and serene. I fell asleep before I knew it and woke up at 5 AM. The morning bath, while gazing at the sea, soothed my fatigue. I attended breakfast at 7 AM. The spread was lighter compared to dinner. However, the Rishiri-grown Taco Curry was superb. The texture of the octopus meat was exquisite. With Kamaboko, Mentai, and Chidoriyaki included, the breakfast was certainly not lacking. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, I checked out at 7:45 AM. I booked the 8:55 ferry to Wakkanai and requested the shuttle service during check-in. About 8 guests depart from the hotel to the ferry terminal at 8:00. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Since the hotel offers a shuttle service, even someone traveling on foot was able to rest well. Thank you."

"I stayed for one night without meals. The staff were very polite. The bathroom and toilet were shared, but clean. Amenities included a yukata, towels, and toothbrushes. There was a hair dryer in the room. Overall, the place is a little old, but I had a comfortable stay! Those who are sensitive to bugs might find it bothersome. I don't mind bugs, but one did come into the room (it was something like a pill bug, so I don't think it was particularly harmful). I really enjoyed the island!"

"My experience at the Rishirifuji Kanko Hotel was very positive. Before booking, I had a few questions and called the hotel directly. Fujita-san was extremely helpful, and her welcoming attitude played a big role in my decision to stay here. I chose a “Japanese” room facing the port, and it was a delightful surprise. The room had clearly been renovated recently, featuring a modern and comfortable design. Contrary to the typical image of a "Japanese room" with sleeping on futons and sitting on cushions, this one had proper beds, ensuring a great night’s sleep. Others have mentioned the pillows—and they truly are incredible! I decided to skip the set dinner and instead took up a local restaurant recommendation from the hotel staff. It was delicious, and one of the staff members even offered to drive me there! That’s a level of hospitality that really sets this place apart. I did, however, opt for the Japanese breakfast (picture attached), which was far better than what I’ve experienced at most Japanese hotels. The Japanese bath was also a nice touch—while it didn’t have any special views, it was spacious and very relaxing. The location is unbeatable—right next to the port, with restaurants and cafes nearby, and within walking distance to hiking trails and other restaurants. The view from my room was great, with a nice view of the port and the mountain (you'll have to lean out the window a little- photo), adding to the overall charm. Rishirifuji Kanko Hotel may not be the Four Seasons, but it is a quaint, friendly, comfortable, and accommodating hotel that I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a memorable and authentic experience."

"I stayed here on a tour. It was a very convenient location, with a Seico Mart nearby! A staff member I met by chance told me that I could watch the sunset and stargazing from the rooftop, so I was able to do so. It was a hot spring, but it was just a regular bath. Is it a large bath? It felt more like a medium-sized bath. The food was average, but there were two handsome staff members. The ocean was nearby, so I could take a walk and watch the sunrise over Cape Heshi."

"Round-trip transportation to the ferry terminal is available. The hotel staff were very hospitable. You can see the sunset from your room. The hotel is also clean. The large public bath is not a hot spring, but you can relax there. There is also a rooftop where you can watch the sunset and starry sky. Dinner is a buffet with sashimi and bouillabaisse dishes. Breakfast is a buffet with unlimited salmon roe and sweet shrimp. We had a relaxing time on the island with two meals included."

"The hotel's facilities are a bit old, but the service is very good. It offers free airport and harbor shuttle services, as well as free bicycles – a must-do activity on Rishiri Island. The food is quite good and varied, offering decent value for money. However, as some online reviews have mentioned, the hotel only has fans, not air conditioning. But given the pleasant temperature on Rishiri Island, air conditioning isn't really necessary."

"We booked two meals and one night's stay, and the food was quite unique, though not cheap. However, considering the island's special conditions, the price was barely acceptable after deducting the round-trip ferry tickets to Wakkanai. A particularly unique experience was getting up early to climb the huge rock observation deck next to the hotel for a stunning sunrise. The only downside was that the bicycles available for rent were very old, and many were not electric; cycling around the island was incredibly exhausting."
