This backpackers was of a very high standard and a lot of thought had gone into all the facilities and services. It was great value for money, warm and welcoming. The couple running were very helpful with information about the various activities in the area. Highly recommended.

🛍️ The hotel is conveniently located just behind SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto and is a mere 10-minute walk from the main shopping street. It is also surrounded by tram stations, making travel easy and accessible. 🚙 Although the hotel does not have its own parking lot, it offers discounts at nearby parking facilities. I found it more convenient, however, to park at the lot directly in front of the hotel for 1,400 Yen per night, which is almost the same price as the hotel's discounted options. 🛌 The room size is typical for a Japanese hotel with two twin beds, but the bathroom is slightly larger than average. The only downside is that one of the beds is positioned too close to the window, meaning you'll sleep near the curtain, which is a bit dusty.

As the first stop of my birthday trip, I chose Aso. Having previously worked as a hotel management professional, I had high expectations for the hotel’s facilities and services. My stay at Kakuman Hotel, along with my traveling companions, was thoroughly enjoyable—from check-in to the overall amenities, everything exceeded our satisfaction. The staff we encountered were exceptionally friendly, whether at the front desk or in the restaurant. Additionally, experiencing hot springs for the first time left us feeling deeply relaxed. Thank you to Kakuman Hotel for adding color to my journey.🙏🏼 While every aspect was highly satisfying, there was a minor shortcoming: the majority of diners in the restaurant were Korean tourists. On my second night, a small incident occurred during dinner. The server assigned me a seat where only tableware and a departure-time notice were placed. After I retrieved my food, I found three Korean guests (two elderly individuals and a middle-aged man) preparing to sit there. I was confused whether I had taken the wrong seat or if there was another reason, so I asked the guests. Unexpectedly, the man loudly called over the female server who had arranged the seat and sharply questioned her in Japanese. The server later found me the correct seat, which was at the table adjacent to the three guests. I felt deeply sorry for the female server being unjustly scolded, and I also did not understand why the Korean man needed to accuse her in such a loud tone—I would have been happy to apologize for my misunderstanding. Regarding the above incident, I would like to offer a suggestion: the tables in the restaurant are each equipped with a bucket of tableware and wet wipes, but there are no numbers or markers to identify the assigned seats. Guests can only rely on placing their own items or memory to remember their seats. I believe I am not the only one who has encountered a similar issue, and the hotel may consider adding markers to each table to make it easier for guests to recognize their assigned seats.

The 22m room that I booked was spacious and the bed was comfortable and big too. They provided two pillows but one too flat and the other too small.  Hotel lobby provides toiletries for guests. They have bath salts with Christmas decorations which is great for the festive season. Location wise it is a short walk from Karashima station. Maybe 5 minutes.

The hotel is very dated. The breakfast area is small and guest have to be assigned breakfast slots. The food selection was limited.   However the location is very good. In the shopping arcade and near to 2 tram station and the bus terminal. Was convenient for us to travel from Kumamoto to Hakata via expressway bus at the bus terminal.

An absolutely wonderful experience.
The staff at the ryokan were incredibly polite and always ready to help with anything we needed. Upon check-in, we were provided with traditional attire, pajamas, tabi slippers, bath amenities, and a small welcome treat with matcha and coffee. We also asked at the front desk if they could give us a ride to the bus stop after check-out, and they kindly said yes, of course. 
Our room was spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated. At first, we were planning to explore several other local onsens, but after experiencing the ones at the ryokan, we felt completely satisfied. There are separate baths for hotel guests (men’s and women’s), baths open to both guests and visitors (also divided by gender), as well as a private onsen. One of the onsens also has a sauna.
The traditional dinner and breakfast were both impressive—delicious and very generous in portion.
The surrounding grounds are stunning, perfect for peaceful walks. This ryokan is a bit further from the main cluster of inns, but that was exactly what we wanted—to enjoy quiet walking.
At night, our futons were laid out for us, adding to the authentic experience. The only reason I deducted one star is the very bright green light on the ceiling that stays on all night and can’t be turned off or covered. I didn’t have a sleep mask with me, and the ryokan didn’t provide one, so I had a sleepless night. It was quite unpleasant.
That said, I still highly recommend this ryokan—it’s an unforgettable place to stay.

Hotel is clean and the self service lounge is great. Has alcohol, soft drinks, instant noodles and nuts. However the hall way smells a bit off and the front counter service is lacking. Ask to exchange notes and they refused on both occasions. Not great at all.

This stay at Ryokan Sanga is faultless, from service, to food, hot springs to everything, it’s so thoughtfully set up and delivered. It’s not a luxury place but our stay there is well beyond luxury. Love it so much and have no hesitation to recommend it. Worth all the travel to meet the nice people in this wonderland of onset.

在阿蘇寧靜山區中的高級傳統溫泉旅館，不可能期望會有鐵路或公共交通工具直達吧！只適合自駕遊的人士，去最近的便利店駕車4分鐘就到。 服務好得不能再要求更多，非常有善，服務員能用簡單英文溝通。早晚餐都很美味，在獨立房間內進食。原本有和牛跟馬刺身，但由於我們都不吃，check-in 時說明，服務員都很努力幫我們跟廚師溝通改為鴨肉跟生魚片。 房間非常大，電視是大尺寸的Sony 近年新款的智能電視，Wifi 穩定，可以待在房間泡溫泉、躺在沙發耍廢看YouTube，不怕晚上沒事做。 整間飯店只得7間房，所以住客不多。房間已有獨立泡湯，晚上還可以用大浴場（有室內和室外） 再任用5間獨立湯屋，泡得非常爽！ 下次如有機會經過阿蘇做中途站，一定會再來！
