1. Parking - Parking is behind the hotel, and they will check your booking and give you a parking chit (駐車券). The person manning the parking situation doesn't inform you beforehand that you have to bring this chit to the lobby for check in. We left it on the dashboard as we thought it indicates that we can park here. If you're travelling with alot of baggage, it can get pretty inconvenient as you will have to walk one round around the hotel for accessible routes to avoid a flight of stairs.
2. Check in procedure - 三條-san was helping us with the check in. Did not feel welcomed, and everything just felt routined and mechanical. This was still acceptable. When it came to asking for the parking chit, we said we left it on the dashboard and whether we could return later to show it to him. We were really not informed that we had to bring it to the reception. 三條-san's face immediately showed a face of disgust and annoyance, and he mildly rolled his eyes too in displeasure. My partner immediately ran to the car to get it for him there and then. This was pretty shocking to me as I did not expect Japanese hospitality to be this rude and nobody mentioned to us to bring the chit to the reception. He could have been more patient and handled it more professionally.
We were also unaware at the time of making a hotel reservation that you have to book a breakfast slot at the time of your check in. We checked in at around 7pm, and we were only left with the 6am or 6:30am breakfast slot. This felt very restrictive as everyone has different waking habits or plans for the next day (Felt like we were back in school). You were also restricted to 50 minutes duration at breakfast. Having to change my plan entirely just because of this restriction felt ridiculous. Would I get a refund of the cost of the breakfast if I can't make it for any of the breakfast timings? If this was made known at the point of the hotel reservation, I might have reconsidered as the slots for the more human timings seem to get snatched up really quickly. All in all, the check in progress was pleasant and 三條-san was a huge reason for it. I will recommend future visitors to avoid him if you see that there are other staff manning the reception desk.
3. The J floor rooms were lovely. Clean, decent size, filled with amenities and complimentary drinks even those in the fridge. The hotel room itself was lovely compared to what happened in the lobby.
4. Breakfast - Despite being left with the ridiculously early breakfast slots, breakfast spread was great. Wide range of food and if you get a window seat, you have a good view of the city.
The staff was very helpful and professional. Before our stay, I inquired about shipping our luggage to the airport, and as we checked in they had information for me for when I needed to bring my luggage down. Also, I didn't need to do any of the paperwork (as I did at Karaska Hotel in Tokyo). The staff took care of everything for me. All I had to do was pay for it.
The hotel is connected to the train station via the Midori market place. From the second floor of the hotel we accessed the Midori market area where we purchased a lof of our omiyage(gifts for friends). The train station had about 4 floors of stores attached to it. We had breakfast at the train station -- a small udon stand. The location was very good and I would definitely book here again. The train station has a pedestrian bridge on the second floor that connects to the Don Quixote across the street. 2 km away is the Zenkoji Temple, where there is a shopping street and a large Buddhist temple to visit.
Our room was cleaned every day and they were very conscientious and very careful. They left a note saying that any cups with liquids are left as is just in case. There was three of us sharing a room with two singles and an additional bed. The room was spacious even with three of us sharing. There was a little table with two chairs on the side.
The location is near but consider as far walking from station. It’s very far from the walking streets/ town and castle (approx 1km or slightly more). The bus/ transport couldn’t stop exact to those area hence walking is required. If you wanted to stay close to the station, there’s more better choices which more straight forward locate from the stations. Hotel buena vista just not as straight forward.
The staff is just junior inexperience. I have phone data issue and ask for wifi assistance. The wifi in the lobby is so weak that I couldn’t connect. I ended up going back to JR station to get the public wifi to fix my data. Staff just look at me without offering any solutions.
But one staff is kind and he stood at the lobby. He handed me the Matsumoto map for my exploring before the 3pm check in. Hey, I expected this is done by the one at the counter not this gentleman who stand at the hotel lobby!
When it mentioned hotel buena vista has good cafe etc etc .. it’s actually dated and nothing to shout about.
However the perks is to book a slot and visit the sister hotel closer to the mountain with the provided shuttle bus for their onsen facilities. That was top notch !!! Please book it earlier before it’s gone. However the slot available is dinner time. So please consider it.
It is a 2-floor hotel with hot spring for the guests to enjoy. Though the staff speak little English, but they try their best to communicate. I enjoy most the food they offer. The package includes breakfast and dinner. To my surprise, the dinner is a 5-course french cuisine with coffee at the end. The quality is high not only the food but service. The breakfast is mixed with French and Japanese style. Main course is french and served, and the Japanese food and drink is in buffet style.
I learnt that some people may find the location is not very convenient. However, the hotel provides shuttle bus service to and from the train station. Kindly make reservation in advance and the transport is well managed. If you love a relaxing and quiet holiday in Karuiazawa, this hotel is a good choice.
Excellent stay all round.
-parking on site and readily available
- good breakfast with lots of different options
- fun and free drinks and snacks hour from 2115 to 2230 every night. Includes self serve alcoholic drinks, ice cream, popcorn etc
- clean rooms with excellent amenities and free toothbrushes, razors, face towels, bath salts etc.
- smart room layout despite usual japanese small size
- free bike hire which we made use of every day
- excellent customer service. Very friendly, patient and helpful
Would 100% recommend staying here and would come back in a heartbeat.
The location is a bit bad because its so far away from everything with no real food options nearby. If you have a car this is not an issue. The buffet however is outrageously expensive at 8000 yen per person.
The detergent they used on the sheets seems to have irritated my skin.
However their customer service was absolutely fantastic as was their hot spring
I had a wonderful experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, making my check-in process smooth and welcoming. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a pleasant stay in Karuizawa. I will definitely consider returning on my next visit!”

CChenieeOne of the best hotels I’ve stayed in. We visited in early November 2025 during the autumn season, and the beautiful foliage added such a romantic touch to the surroundings.
I loved the modern interior, the comfortable bed, and the overall room layout. The hotel looks incredibly romantic at night too, especially with the reflections on the pond.
The outdoor onsen was a highlight. It felt serene at night, and the maple trees lit up in the evening made it absolutely scenic. The onsen is located in a separate building, so you do have to walk through the cold, but it wasn’t an issue as the hotel provides thicker robes. If I had to nitpick, the indoor slippers weren’t the most comfortable.
We drove during our stay, so getting to nearby attractions was easy. There’s a large supermarket and a pharmacy about 5–10 minutes away, which was very convenient — we didn’t even need to visit any convenience stores.
This hotel impressed me so much that it made me look up where else Hotel Indigo has branches in Japan!
MMisafir KullanıcıI stayed at this hotel with my wife and two children during a two-night trip to Karuizawa in early February. The hotel is around 100 years old and its claim to fame is that John Lennon has stayed there. The piano that he played on is still in the bar.
Location: The hotel is near Old Ginza Street and around a 15-minutes drive from Karuizawa station. It was not difficult to find, but you must navigate a narrow approach to the hotel which is icy at this time of the year, so you must drive carefully.
Cleaniness: The staff told me that the hotel was only recently and everything was very clean and in good condition.
Service: The receptionist that conducted the check-in was probably the Japanese that spoke the best English that I had encountered on this trip. He spent a lot of time explaining the hotel to our family. The porter was also very helpful and polite. When we asked for extra toothbrushes and slippers for the children, housekeeping was very prompt in delivering them and even brought some children's robes for my sons.
Facilities: The hotel did not have many facilities. There is a small shop, a bar and a french restaurant but not much else. Some rooms had private hot springs in them and they gave us the opportunity to upgrade. Our room, had a small balcony even though we were on the ground floor. It looked onto a wooded area so there was not much to see, especially at night. However, when it snowed the next morning, my kids loved going out and playing in the snow. I was particularly impressed by the breakfast. It was a simple American breakfast very well presented. It was very pleasurable to look out into the inner courtyard with it was snowing.
Overall: I like this hotel as it has a lot of character. It is architecturally attractive and has kept a lot of its charm despite renovation. The staff are very professional and polite. I would stay in this hotel again.
MMisafir KullanıcıProvides shuttle services to Karuizawa Station (which is also where the factory outlet is). Super good service, all the staff members are so welcoming, nice and helpful, and they bid the guests goodbye the traditional Japanese way when we leave, such a warm touch. Very good breakfast with a super nice view. Rooms are spacious enough and very comfortable.
MMeowVanWhat an awesome experience! The hotel offered exemplary service before we even arrived. Due to special travel arrangements, we arrived late and the staff quick to arrange an in-room bento dinner for us before our arrival. When we got there, we were immediately blown away by the gorgeousness of the hotel.
Despite its age, everything was very clean and polished. I can see that great care had been taken to upkeep the hotel and it’s premises, which are extraordinarily beautiful. We couldn’t resist taking pictures even after check-out, and it took us an hour to finally reluctantly leave. Words cannot actually do the place justice, you must visit there yourself.
We were very impressed with how delicious the food was, and the attention to detail, including the placement of the food, the coordination of food color. My mouth is still watering as I recall how delicious it was. I had 10 helpings of their prime rib one day. Besides, I had a dietary restriction and the staff were really careful with that, to the extent of reminding me what dishes not to eat everyday at their breakfast and dinner buffet.
In addition to excellent food and service, the hotel went out of its way to be very eco-friendly. For every day that we did not need our room to be tidied, we earned points, which can be traded in for ice cream or other goodies.
Finally, the staff spoke perfect English. This is rare indeed, and it made everything so much easier and so much more enjoyable. Thanks for the experience!

MMisafir KullanıcıIt was my first time staying in this hotel, my second time in Hakuba.
The hotel staff was very nice and helpful.
The equipment in the hotel is clean and new. I also liked the design of the hotel.
One slight disadvantage was that the hotel was far from many facilities in Hakuba; it would be fine if I were driving. The heat in the summertime makes moving around Hakuba difficult.
MMisafir KullanıcıHotel Marroad is just a few minutes by the shuttle bus from the station , and it can also be reached on foot. We booked a room for 4 people and the room size is good at a very reasonable price (include breakfast). The fixtures are a bit old. However, the room and the amenities are very clean. We come to skiing and the hotel has a rental service (much cheaper than you rent at the ski field) which is very convenient. Also, they send us to ski field every day.
Staff can speak little English, but they are all very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is delicious, and it is a must try.
DDandDFirst off, the staff are lovely. Even with a language barrier they were friendly, and the reception man was kind. I've stayed at Villa about 4 times now, but this was the first time in about 11 years. Sadly there is a lot that needs to be fixed. The pricing has increased heavily since I was last here. Whilst it is very close to the ski lifts of Ichinose Family, this is a budget accommodation. But I would still expect it to be cleaned more regularly. The rooms are fine, but the hallways, and common areas look very dated and have paint peeling, cracks showing, carpet is old, worn and dirty, and nothing would imply it is being maintained.
We never had dinner here, but breakfast was a buffet style, and whether it's worth it to you or not is a personal thing.
The convenience store downstairs is only open at night times, and not every day. I remember the restaurant at ground level facing the road served excellent gyoza, ramen and beer. Sadly it's been closed for a while and used as storage.
I don't want Villa to become like the rest of the hotels in Ichinose, only for school groups or super expensive because of their proximity to the ski lifts, but it really needs to have some money invested in the property, replacing old and damaged decor, and carpets professionally cleaned yearly.
But thank you to all the staff for being lovely and kind people.
