"One of the best onsen hotels ever for a good price value! It’s about under 10minute walk from Matsumoto Station situated in a quiet corner of the main road. You have to take off your shoes and store them at the front entrance shoe lockers, because the entire hotel floor is tatami (good experience). Front desk staff very hospitable as they even help to wipe your luggage wheels clean. Room is also entirely tatami, pretty spacious, and very clean. Appreciate that the air conditioner can be toggled between heating & cooling, instead of centralized conditioning. There’s a small private shower cubicle. There’s a free welcome snack in the fridge everyday. At 9:30pm-11pm, there’s even free “Yonaki Soba Noodles”. The public onsen itself was also great, with both indoor and outdoor options. The bed is of a low bed frame slightly mimicking futon style, it was a good night sleep. Definitely will be back to any of their similar chains across Japan!"

From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were enveloped by a warm and inviting ambiance that set the tone for the rest of our stay. Our room was a perfect sanctuary—spacious, meticulously clean, and adorned with subtle touches of Japanese artistry. The panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from our window were nothing short of breathtaking, especially when the mountains were bathed in the soft glow of sunrise. The traditional tatami flooring and comfortable futon bedding provided an authentic experience without sacrificing comfort. One of the standout features of Shoho is its exceptional onsen facilities. Soaking in the natural hot springs while gazing at the picturesque scenery was incredibly rejuvenating. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) offered a tranquil escape where the stresses of daily life simply melted away. The hotel's attention to detail extended to these spaces, with beautifully crafted woodwork and stone elements enhancing the overall atmosphere. Culinary delights awaited us at every meal. The kaiseki dinner was a masterpiece—a multi-course feast that highlighted seasonal and local ingredients. Despite any language barriers, their kindness and professionalism shone through. The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the rich cultural heritage of Matsumoto. We were just a short drive from the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. Strolling through the historic Nakamachi Street with its classic white-walled storehouses turned boutique shops and cafes was a delightful way to spend an afternoon. In addition to its proximity to cultural sites, Shoho serves as a great base for nature enthusiasts. The nearby Kamikochi Valley offers stunning hiking trails that showcase the unspoiled beauty of the Japanese Alps. Returning to the comfort of the hotel after a day of exploration was something we looked forward to, especially knowing a soothing onsen soak awaited us. In summary, Shoho encapsulates the essence of Japanese hospitality. Every aspect of our stay was thoughtfully curated to provide comfort, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. We left feeling deeply refreshed and with a greater appreciation for the wonders of Matsumoto. Shoho is more than just a place to stay—it's an experience that lingers long after you've departed. "I changed rooms because my first room smelled strongly like someone's body odor, but the second room also smelled, just less. So I didn't bother to change again. I've never had this issue elsewhere in Japan and I've stayed at a lot of different hotels in Japan, weird... Breakfast has varieties but tasted so so... I was woken up once by people talking in the hallway. Door sound proof isn't great. So if you're a light sleeper, maybe use ear plugs. Good service and amenities otherwise."

"It is a pleasure to stay at this hotel because of its cleanliness and the services it provides. Despite the fact that the property is old and needs some renovation, I am still happy to leave a very good review. The hotel provides a free shuttle service to Matsumoto station. Additionally, it offers complimentary onsen access at another hotel, with shuttle bus service included. Hotel guests should make full use of these. Reminder: To ensure your seat at the onsen, please make the reservation by 9am every day. I will stay at this hotel again when I visit Matsumoto next time."

"No shower available inside the room, we need to use the hot spring. However, the water was not hot enough! I found two Japanese ladies use both indoor and outdoor hot spring just for few minutes and then left with disappointment. The food qualities of both dinner and breakfast were not up to the standards of “Onsen” hotels in Japan at this price level I had gone before. Unfortunately this hotel is the only one available for booking on Trip.com near the area of Kamicochi. Will not recommend to anyone."

"Staffs are nice, location is incredible, there's free ramen/ice-cream provided after 8pm. No cleaning service during my stay but hey provided more towels for us (I stay for3 nights)."

"The hotel is showing its age. Furniture is dated & the beds were VERY hard. There was a Big step up into the bathroom from the room which is difficult if your a senior like my wife & I. The front office staff were friendly and helpful."

"Though parking is not on site and a short distance away, it is not too far away from eateries and shopping areas. Parking instructions were clear and easy to follow. Lobby area looks archaic but that does not matter as the room is clean and of a good size."

"Renovated lobby area, onsen lacks of ryokan style of cleaning essential. This hotel run by Chinese people so did not feel that they paid attention to the detail of service. Dinner kaiseki meal were underpar. Breakfast even horrible. I can tell they did not serve freshly made salmon, they were very hard to bite. Most item are heated from frozen like suimai and xiao longbao which I didn't expect to have as Japanese breakfast. Miso soup was the same leftover from dinner. Coffee not hot at all. I don't think I will stay there again."
